Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jul 22/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A strong wind warning is current for offshore southern
coastal waters from Double Island Point to Point Danger.
A strong wind warning has been issued for offshore southern coastal waters from
Sandy Cape to Double Island Point for Saturday.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high south of Tasmania extends a ridge into western and northern
Queensland. The high will weaken and drift southeast over the weekend. A low
pressure system lies over the northeastern Tasman Sea. The low is expected to
deepen further before moving rapidly southeast late Saturday. A 3 to 4 metre
S'ly swell will extend over southern offshore waters on Saturday.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Fine over the state apart from a possible shower or two this evening on the
northwestern Cape York Peninsula coast. Mostly moderate SW to SE winds, tending
strong offshore of the far southern coast.
Forecast for Saturday
Fine across the state. A cold and clear morning over the interior with
widespread early frosts. Early frost also expected over higher ground in the
tropics. Light to moderate S to SE winds, with afternoon sea breezes on the east
tropical coast. Strong SW to SE winds over southern offshore waters. A 3 to 4
metre S'ly swell will extend from the south over offshore southern waters.
Forecast for Sunday
The low will move to the southeast of New Zealand, easing winds along
southern Queensland waters. The high will move east into the Tasman Sea,
extending a ridge over much of Queensland. Winds will tend more onshore on the
Fraser and north tropical coasts, with isolated showers developing. Fine
conditions will persist elsewhere under the influence of the ridge, though some
cloud will linger on the far southern coast. Extensive early frost will occur in
the cool and clear conditions over the interior and also over higher ground in
the tropics.
Forecast for Monday
The high in the Tasman Sea, together with a new high over the Great
Australian Bight, will maintain a ridge of high pressure over Queensland.
Moisture will continue to increase over the eastern tropics and the onshore wind
flow will move isolated showers onto the east tropical coast. Isolated showers
are also expected over the southern coast due to cold temperatures aloft, mostly
affecting areas north of Brisbane. Fine conditions will occur elsewhere.
Extensive early frost is again expected over the southern and central interior.
Higher moisture levels through the northern interior will decrease the risk of
early frost.
Forecast for Tuesday
The new high will move east over southeastern Australia, maintaining a firm
ridge over Queensland. Showers will increase over the east tropical coast
between Cairns and Townsville due to a freshening onshore wind flow and an
approaching upper level trough. Isolated showers will occur elsewhere along the
east tropical coast and adjacent inland, and also move onto the Central and
Fraser coasts. Fine conditions are expected elsewhere under a stable airmass.
Increasing moisture will result in a smaller early frost area over the central
and southern interior.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The new high will move east into the Tasman Sea during the outlook period,
extending fresh to strong SE winds along much of the east Queensland coast.
Showers will occur along the east coast and adjacent inland in the onshore wind
flow, more frequent over the North Tropical Coast. Mid level cloud will most
likely increase over northern Queensland on Friday due to a weak trough,
enhancing showers further on the northeast tropical coast and producing isolated
showers over the northern interior. Conditions should remain fine elsewhere over
the interior, with early frost continuing over southern and central parts.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Saturday.
