MELBOURNE - Jul 15/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for waters between Torres Strait and Double Island Point, excluding Hervey Bay. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1035hPa] east of Tasmania extends a ridge about the east coast of Queensland. The high will move east over the next few days and weaken as it moves across the Tasman Sea. An upper-level trough will move steadily eastward across the state today, moving offshore later today. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Rain areas over the east of the state will continue to contract further east, but morning drizzle and afternoon showers are expected over the western, central and southern interior. Maximum temperatures will generally be several degrees below average under the cloud and rain band. Isolated showers will continue about the Peninsula coast and develop about the inland tropics in the afternoon. Strong winds are expected about the east coast between the Torres Strait and Double Island Point, easing between Cape Tribulation and St Lawrence by this afternoon. Forecast for Sunday The upper-level trough is expected to have cleared the east coast on Sunday. It is expected to remain mostly cloudy across the state with morning drizzle areas over much of the state tending to isolated afternoon showers. Early fog is likely about the southwest of the state. Showers will be more frequent about the far southeast of the state due to lingering instability but should ease during the day. Isolated showers will persist about the northeast tropical coast. Strong winds will become restricted to the coast north of Cape Tribulation. Forecast for Monday A high in the Tasman Sea will continue to direct a moist low-level flow across much of Queensland. Morning drizzle areas are again expected about central and eastern parts of the state before tending to isolated showers in the afternoon. Early fog patches are possible about the southern and south western interior. Isolated showers are expected to continue about the northeast tropical coast with strong SE winds about the coast north of Cairns. Forecast for Tuesday As a new high strengthens over the Great Australian Bight, a drier southerly airflow becomes established over most of Queensland. Fine conditions are expected over most locations with just some isolated showers over the northeast tropical coast. Early frost is likely over the southeast interior. Strong SE winds should become confined to the east coast north of Cooktown. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The new high is expected to move to the southeast of Tasmania by the end of the outlook period and strengthen as it does so. This will maintain the southerly airflow over the state and predominantly fine conditions, with just the possibility of some isolated showers about the North Tropical Coast. Early frost areas will become more widespread over the southern interior. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Saturday.
