MELBOURNE - Jul 14/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for waters between Torres Strait and Point Danger. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high in the eastern Great Australian Bight extends a ridge through Queensland. The high will move east over the next few days, strengthening during Friday and then weakening on Saturday as it moves into the Tasman Sea. An upper level trough over South Australia is slowly approaching western Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Cloud and patchy rain will continue in the southwest of the state and extend into the southeast interior. Isolated showers are expected about the east coast, north of about Mackay. Fine conditions are expected elsewhere. Fresh to strong SE winds off the northeast tropical coast. Light to moderate E to SE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Friday Cloud and rain areas will slowly progress eastwards to affect most of the state during the day. Afternoon thunderstorms are also possible about the southwest of the state. Isolated showers are expected over the tropics, tending scattered about the northeast tropical coast with rain at times. Maximum temperatures will be several degrees below average under the cloud and rain band. SE winds are expected to freshen about the east coast as the southern high intensifies with strong winds for eastern coastal waters. Moderate SE to NE winds inland. Forecast for Saturday The upper level trough is forecast to move into eastern Queensland during the day. Rain areas will therefore contract further east, but morning drizzle and afternoon showers will continue over the central and southern interior. Maximum temperatures will be several degrees below average under the cloud and rain band. Isolated showers will continue about the Peninsula coast and develop about the inland tropics in the afternoon. Strong winds are expected about the east coast north of about Double Island Point. Forecast for Sunday The upper level trough is expected to clear the east coast but it is expected to remain mostly cloudy across the state with morning drizzle areas tending to isolated afternoon showers. Showers will be more frequent about the far of the southeast of the state due to lingering cold air aloft. The far west of the state should be fine. Strong winds will become restricted to coast north of Cairns. Forecast for Monday A high in the Tasman Sea will continue to direct a moist low level flow across most of Queensland. Morning drizzle areas are again expected about the central and eastern parts of the state which tend to isolated showers in the afternoon. Isolated showers are expected to continue about the northeast tropical coast with strong SE winds about the coast north of Cairns. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Showers should become restricted to parts of the east coast and the southeast interior by Tuesday with mostly fine conditions expected elsewhere in the state. Isolated showers are possible about the southeast coast on Wednesday and Thursday but these should be largely offshore. The rest of the state is expected to be fine. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Friday.
