MELBOURNE - Jul 13/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for waters between Torres Strait and Cooktown. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high near Victoria extends a ridge through Queensland. The high will strengthen over the next few days while moving slowly east. An upper level trough over Western Australia is slowly approaching western Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Cloud and patchy rain in the southwest of the state, extending east to the southeast interior late in the day. Isolated showers about the northeast tropical coast, extending to the central and southeast exposed coastal areas during the afternoon and evening. Fine elsewhere. Fresh to strong SE winds off the northeast tropical coast. Light to moderate E to SE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Friday The upper level trough is forecast to enter western Queensland with rain areas slowly shifting eastwards and into the eastern districts during the day. Possible afternoon thunderstorms about the southwest. Isolated showers generally expected over the tropics. SE winds to freshen about the east coast as the southern high intensifies, with strong winds for eastern coastal waters. Forecast for Saturday The upper level trough forecast to progress into eastern Queensland. Rain areas will therefore contract further east, but expect morning drizzle and afternoon showes over the central and southern interior. Isolated showers about the Peninsula coast, and developing inland in the afternoon. Strong winds expected south of St Lawrence on the east coast and possibly in the north tropics. Forecast for Sunday Upper level trough is expected to clear the east coast with only isolated showers remaining apart from some early rain in the southeast and drizzle about the interior. Isolated afternoon showers in the eastern and central parts of the state. Fine in the far west. Strong winds restricted to coast north of Cooktown. Light to moderate E to SE winds elsewhere. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Showers to decrease over Queensland interior on Monday, but early drizzle still expected. Showers should be restricted to parts of the east coast and the southeast interior by Tuesday, otherwise fine through the state. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Thursday.
