MELBOURNE - Jul 12/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for waters between Torres Strait and Cooktown. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high pressure system over South Australia is weakening and extends a ridge across southern Queensland. A new high will form over Victoria over the next few days and intensify. A upper level trough is approaching Queensland from the west and will extend rain areas across the state. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday The high weakens over South Australia but the ridge persists over southern Queensland. High cloud will increase from the west across southern districts with patchy light rain developing over the Channel Country. Dry over most of the state with extensive early frost over the southern and southeast interior this morning. Isolated showers developing about the northeast tropical coast and exposed points of the central coast overnight. Fresh to strong SE winds over the tropics. Light to moderate S to SE winds over the remainder of the state. Winds tending NW on the southeast coast. Forecast for Thursday The new high intensifies over Victoria with freshening winds about the east coast of Queensland. High cloud and patchy rain develops further in the west and extends into the central interior. Early frost now contracting to the Darling Downs. Showers developing further about the northeast tropical coast and the central coast. Strong winds persisting off the northeast tropical coast. Forecast for Friday The upper level trough enters western Queensland with rain areas shifting to eastern half of the state. Showers and possible afternoon thunderstorms developing over the central interior after the rainband. Showers generally over the tropics and about the east coast. Showers increasing on the southeast coast and tending to rain areas overnight. A little early frost over the Granite Belt. SE winds continue to freshen about the east coast as the southern high intensifies. Strong winds now extending south down the east coast. Forecast for Saturday The upper level trough progresses into eastern Queensland and contracts rain areas further east. Early fog and afternoon showers to follow over the interior. A few afternoon thunderstorms may persist near the southern border in the west. Strong winds now south of St Lawrence on the east coast. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday Sunday, as the upper level trough clears the east coast, rain areas also clear east leaving showers and drizzle remaining over most of Queensland interior with some early fog. Fine in the far west. Strong SE winds redeveloping north of Bowen but easing south of St Lawrence. Monday, showers decreasing over Queensland interior but early fog remains. Showers generally about the east coast. Tuesday, an approaching upper level trough generates more patchy rain in the far west while showers contract generally to eastern districts. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Wednesday.
