MELBOURNE - Jul 12/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for waters between Torres Strait and Cape Tribulation. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high pressure system near Adelaide is moving slowly northeast, extending a ridge across South Australia into southern Queensland. The high weakens over South Australia as new high forms over the Great Australian Bight continuing to extend a ridge across southern Queensland. An upper level trough over Western Australia will move east approaching western Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Isolated coastal showers north of Cairns. Fine over the remainder of the state. Increasing cloud in the far west of the state though no rain expected. Mostly light to moderate east to southeast winds, tending fresh to strong about the coast north of Bowen. Forecast for Wednesday Light patchy rain expected to develop in the Channel Country with isolated showers about the east coast north of Rockhampton. Areas of early morning frost in interior parts of southern and central Queensland. Light to moderate southeast to northeast winds, tending fresh to strong about the coast north of Cairns. Forecast for Thursday The surface high is expected to move slowly east. The upper trough is forecast to move east with thickening cloud over much of western Queensland. Patchy rain is expected to develop further over western districts and extend eastward during the day. Early frost should contract to the southeast interior. Coastal showers about the east coast extending south to Fraser Island during the day and developing south of Cape Moreton in the evening. Strong winds to continue over the northeast tropics. Forecast for Friday The upper level trough is forecast to enter western Queensland with rain areas extending eastward towards the coast and clearing the far west. The southern high is forecast to slightly intensify, freshening the winds about the Queensland east coast. Strong winds now expected to develop southwards to Sandy Cape and possibly further south. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms expected over the western and central interior in the afternoon after the rain areas clear. Showers expected to increase across much of eastern Queensland, especially near the coast, ahead of the rain. Forecast for Saturday The upper level trough is expected to continue to move east contracting the rain areas along with it. A surface trough could possibly develop along the Tropical or Central Coast with fresh to possibly strong easterly to northeasterly winds and increased rainfall to the south of the trough. Elsewhere, isolated showers are forecast in the eastern tropics north of the rain, and isolated afternoon showers west of the upper trough. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday Rain is forecast to clear the state on Sunday as the upper trough moves off into the Coral Sea. Isolated showers and drizzle areas to remain over much of southern interior and in the southeast. Isolated coastal showers in the tropics. Showers are expected to gradually decrease over the interior and southeast on Monday and Tuesday. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Wednesday.
