MELBOURNE - Jun 28/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Torres Strait and Point Danger. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high pressure system over southeast Australia will strengthen and move over the Tasman Sea during the next day or two. An upper-level low will rapidly move eastwards across the southern half of Queensland, increasing shower activity before it moves off the east coast late Wednesday. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Widespread showers over the interior with isolated thunderstorms possible about the southwest and central west parts of the state. Isolated showers to continue about the east coast and adjacent inland, tending scattered about the central and tropical coasts. Fresh to strong SE winds are expected along the east coast with generally moderate SE to E winds over the interior. Forecast for Wednesday Isolated showers, rain areas and possible isolated thunderstorms over the western interior will ease during the morning and contract east. Scattered showers and areas of rain about the central and eastern interior of the state will ease through the day and contract slowly eastwards. Isolated showers will persist about the east coast and adjacent inland, tending scattered about the central and tropical coast. Strong winds SE winds about the entire east coast. Forecast for Thursday The high remains slow-moving in the Tasman Sea and while weakening slightly it remains intense, generating strong SE winds along the east coast of the state. Isolated showers should persist about the length of the east coast and adjacent inland, tending scattered about the north tropical coast. Isolated afternoon showers are likely to develop about parts of the southeast interior. The remainder of the state is expected to be fine. Forecast for Friday The high continues to move southeast over the Tasman Sea and weakens further. Strong SE winds are therefore expected to ease over far southern waters but persist further north. Isolated showers will continue about the east coast but become very isolated away from the north tropical coast where scattered showers will continue. Fine conditions are expected elsewhere in the state with early frosts returning to the Granite Belt and parts of the southeast interior as minimum temperatures fall below average. Forecast for Saturday The high moves rapidly towards New Zealand and weakens significantly. As a result, winds along the east coast will moderate from the south during the course of the day. Isolated showers will continue along the east coast north of about Gladstone, more frequent about the north tropical coast. Generally fine along the east coast further south and in the far north and remaining fine over the interior. Early frosts over the southeast interior. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday A weak ridge of high pressure persists along the east coast, maintaining a mostly moderate SE wind flow about the coast and generally light winds expected over land. Isolated showers are expected to persist over the east coast, north of about Townsville, more frequent about the north tropical coast. Further south along the east coast and in the far north, as well as the state's interior, should remain fine with early frosts about the southeast interior. A weak trough may cross the state late on Sunday or during Monday but little or no rain is expected from this system. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Wednesday.
