MELBOURNE - Jun 28/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Torres Strait and Point Danger. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A ridge of high pressure along the Queensland east coast is expected to strengthen as a large high pressure system develops over southeastern Australia. An upper-level low will move over the southwest of the state during today, increasing instability about the southwest corner of the state. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Widespread showers will develop over the interior with isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms possible about the southwest and central west parts of the state. Isolated showers will continue about the east coast and adjacent inland, tending scattered about the central and tropical coasts. Fresh to strong SE winds are expected along the east coast with generally moderate SE to E winds over the interior. There is just a small chance of an early frost about parts of the Granite Belt. Forecast for Wednesday The high will move over the Tasman Sea and intensify further with strong SE winds persisting along the east coast of Queensland. The upper-level low moves into the southeast of Queensland and weakens as it does so. Scattered showers about most of the interior of the state should tend to ease through the day and contract slowly eastwards. Isolated showers will persist about the east coast and adjacent inland, tending scattered about the central and tropical coast. Minimum temperatures should now be slightly above average for the time of year. Forecast for Thursday The high starts to move south in the Tasman Sea and remains intense with strong SE winds expected to continue along the east coast of the state. Isolated showers should persist about the length of the east coast of Queensland and adjacent inland, tending scattered about the north tropical coast. Isolated afternoon showers are likely about to develop about parts of the southeast interior. The remainder of the state is expected to be fine. Forecast for Friday The high moves further southeast in the Tasman Sea and should now start to weaken. Strong SE winds are therefore expected to ease over far southern waters but persist further north. Isolated showers will continue about the east coast but become very isolated in the far north and far south. Scattered showers will persist about the north tropical coast. Fine conditions are expected elsewhere in the state with early frosts returning to the Granite Belt and parts of the southeast interior. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday The high in the Tasman Sea continues to move southeast, but maintains a weak ridge along the east coast. SE winds should ease further from the south during the outlook period with mostly light winds expected over land. Isolated showers should persist over the east coast north of about Bundaberg, most frequent about the north tropical coast, but shower should clear from the southeast coast. The remainder of the state should remain fine with early frosts about parts of the southeast interior. A weak trough may cross the state late on Sunday or during Monday but little or no rain is expected from this system. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Tuesday.
