MELBOURNE - Jun 27/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Torres Strait and Burnett Heads. A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for waters between Burnett Heads and Point Danger. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A ridge of high pressure along the Queensland east coast is expected to strengthen as a large high pressure system develops over southeast Australia. This ridge will persist for several days and will maintain fresh to strong winds along the east coast for the forecast period. An upper-level low will move over the southwest during Tuesday bringing scattered showers, possible thunderstorms and areas of generally light rain. Forecast for the rest of Monday Isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent inland areas, more frequent along the north tropical coast. Very isolated showers about the eastern interior, extending towards the north and central west areas and clearing early evening. Moderate SE to E winds in eastern parts of the state, fresh to strong at times along the northern and central coasts extending to Burnett Heads. Generally light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Tuesday Widespread showers developing over the interior with isolated afternoon thunderstorms possible in southwest and central parts of the state. Isolated showers will continue about the east coast and adjacent inland, tending scattered about the central and tropical coasts. Early frost is possible over the southeast Darling Downs and Granite Belt. Fresh to strong SE winds along the east coast, increasing in the south late in the day. Generally moderate SE to E winds over the interior. Forecast for Wednesday The high will move over the Tasman Sea and intensify further with strong SE winds persisting along the east coast of Queensland. The upper-level low moves into the southeast of Queensland and weakens as it does so. Scattered showers about the interior of the state should tend to ease through the day and contract slowly eastwards. Isolated showers persisting about the east coast and adjacent inland, tending scattered about the central and tropical coast. Minimum temperatures should now be close to average for this time of year. Forecast for Thursday The high starts to move south in the Tasman Sea and remains intense. Strong SE winds are likely to continue along the east coast of the state. Isolated showers should continue about the length of the east coast and adjacent inland, tending scattered about the north tropical coast. The remainder of the state is expected to be fine. Forecast for Friday The high moves further southeast and weakens. Strong SE winds are expected to ease over southern waters but persist further north. Showers will continue about the east coast but become very isolated in the far north and far south. Scattered showers will persist about the north tropical coast. Fine elsewhere in the state with early frost returning to the Granite Belt and parts of the southern interior. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday The high in the Tasman Sea continues to move southeast, but maintains a weak ridge along the east coast. SE winds easing further from the south during the weekend, with mostly light winds expected over land. Isolated showers persisting over much of the east coast and adjacent inland, most frequent about the north tropical coast. Remaining fine over the interior apart from the chance of some patchy light rain in the far southwest as a weak trough moves through during Sunday or Monday. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Tuesday.
