Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jun 24/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters between
Torres Strait and Bowen.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A slow moving high pressure system [1027 hPa] over western New South Wales
extended a strengthening ridge along the east Queensland coast. A cold front was
moving over the Tasman Sea.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Isolated showers along the north tropical coast, developing about the
southern and central coasts during the day. Fine elsewhere with early morning
frosts over most of the interior. Light to moderate mostly E to SE winds,
tending fresh along the tropical coast.
Forecast for Saturday
The high is likely to remain situated over New South Wales and will maintain
an east to southeasterly flow across Queensland. Shower activity will increase
about the east coast as moisture levels rise with the onshore winds. Isolated
showers may start to develop over the eastern interior in the afternoon. Dry
over the remainder with early morning frosts about the southeast and southern
interior. Fresh to strong SE winds along the east coast north of about Fraser
Island.
Forecast for Sunday
The high will weaken over New South Wales as a new high is expected to move
over South Australia. E to SE winds across most of Queensland with a further
increase in moisture is expected to result in milder temperatures with early
morning frost confined to the southeast Darling Downs and Granite Belt. Showers
about the east coast, extending inland into the central interior in the
afternoon. Fresh to strong SE winds along the tropical and central Queensland
coasts.
Forecast for Monday
The new high is expected to intensify and move east into Victoria, and will
maintain strong SE winds along the tropical and central Queensland coast.
Showers about the east coast, more frequent about the north tropical coast. An
upper level low is expected to approach far western Queensland and increase
instability. Added to this will be increasing moisture from the east across the
tropical interior, leading to isolated afternoon and evening showers over the
central and tropical interior. Early morning frost about the southeast Darling
Downs and Granite Belt
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The large high over Victoria is expected to move slowly east into the Tasman
Sea and bring fresh to strong SE winds to most of the east coast with scattered
showers. The upper level low is expected to move across the tropics during
Tuesday and Wednesday. This will lead to isolated showers over most of the
interior, with the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms over the northwest and
tropical interior. The upper low is expected to move offshore early Thursday
with showers contracting back towards the east Queensland coast. Early morning
frost about the Granite Belt region on Tuesday morning.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Friday.
