MELBOURNE - Jun 23/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Strong wind warning current for the northeast tropical coast north of Cairns and extending south to Bowen during Friday. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high pressure system over South Australia extends a ridge through southern Queensland. The high will move east across the south of the continent over the next few days. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Isolated showers developing about the north east tropical coast overnight, dry over the remainder. Strong SE winds over the NE tropics, north of Cairns. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds about the central coast, lighter winds across southern Queensland. Forecast for Friday The high is expected to move into northern New South Wales and this will turn winds more southeasterly about the Queensland east coast, increasing moisture levels. Isolated shower activity is expected to develop further south along exposed points of the coast. Dry conditions will continue over the interior of the state with early frost areas about the eastern half of the state. Strong SE winds about the east coast are expected to extend south to about Bowen. Forecast for Saturday The high is likely to remain situated over New South Wales and will maintain an east to southeasterly flow across Queensland. Shower activity will increase about the east coast as moisture levels rise with the turning of the winds. Isolated showers may start to develop over the eastern interior in the afternoon. Dry over the remainder with early frost contracting to the southeast and southern interior. Strong winds extending further south to Gladstone on the east coast. Forecast for Sunday The high weakens as it moves offshore from N.S.W but the ridge axis of higher pressure persists, now south of the border. A new high enters South Australia. E/SE winds across most of Queensland with a further increase in moisture leading to milder temperatures with less frost. Early frost now confined to the Granite Belt. Showers persisting about the east coast and extending inland in the afternoon. Strong winds on the east coast easing a little, now north of St Lawrence. Forecast for Monday The next southern high moves into Victoria and intensifies, this maintains the strong SE winds about the Queensland coast north of St Lawrence. An upper level low now approaches western Queensland and increases the instability. Added to this will be increasing moisture from the NE across the southern tropics. This should lead to isolated showers developing across the interior of the southern tropics and the NW of the state in the afternoon. Little change elsewhere. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Tuesday, the southern high enters eastern Victoria turning winds NE'ly over western Queensland. The upper level low now enters the NW of the state. Showers increase across the tropical interior with possible thunderstorms in the northwest. Showers continuing over eastern districts. Wednesday, the upper level low moves to eastern Queensland contracting the showers and thunderstorms further east. Becoming fine over the west. No change in the east. Thursday, showers contracting to the east coast as the upper level low weakens. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Friday.
