MELBOURNE - Jun 22/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Strong wind warnings are current for the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria waters and for coastal waters from Torres Strait to Cairns. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high pressure system over South Australia extends a ridge through Queensland. The high will move east across the south of the continent over the next few days. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Isolated showers developing about the northern tropical east coast. Fine elsewhere. Extensive early frost about the interior. Light to moderate S to SE winds, fresh to strong about the southern Gulf of Carpentaria and northern tropical coast. Forecast for Friday The high is expected to move into northern New South Wales and this will turn winds more southeasterly about the Queensland east coast, increasing moisture levels. Isolated shower activity is expected to develop further south along exposed points of the coast. Dry conditions will continue over the interior of the state with early frost areas about the eastern half of the state. Strong SE winds about the east coast are expected to extend south to about Bowen. Forecast for Saturday The high is likely to remain situated over New South Wales and will maintain an east to southeasterly flow across Queensland. Isolated showers are expected to continue about the east coast in the onshore flow and extend slightly further inland. Dry conditions will continue across the state away from the coastal areas. Strong winds are expected to continue about the east coast north of about Bundaberg. Early frost is again expected over the southern interior of the state. Forecast for Sunday The high should remain centred over New South Wales and weaken. Isolated showers are again expected along the east coast, mainly about the central and tropical coasts and becoming scattered later about the North Tropical Coast. Isolated afternoon showers about the adjacent inland. Strong SE winds are likely to persist about the east coast north of about Bundaberg. The remainder of the state is expected to be fine. Increasing wind and moisture levels should limit any early frost to parts of the Granite Belt. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The high moves southeast into the Tasman Sea during the outlook period, maintaining the southeasterly flow and isolated showers along the east coast. The showers will gradually extend further inland during Tuesday and Wednesday. An upper trough is likely to enter the southwest of the state during Monday night and move slowly east during Tuesday and Wednesday. This is expected to produce thickening cloud and possible areas of rain across the west of the state on Tuesday which should contract eastwards on Wednesday. Early frosts should be confined to the southern interior on Monday morning with minimum temperatures rising above average on Tuesday and Wednesday. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Thursday.
