MELBOURNE - Jun 14/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for southeast Gulf of Carpentaria waters. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A large high near Tasmania directs a cool SW to SE airflow over much of Queensland. A complex low pressure system over northeast New South Wales and the northern Tasman Sea. An upper level low is moving into the southeast Queensland interior. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Isolated showers and morning drizzle over the southern and central interior. Scattered afternoon and evening showers and isolated thunderstorms over the southeast interior. Isolated showers over far northeast Cape York Peninsula. Isolated early light frosts about the tropical interior. Cool with light to moderate SW to SE winds, fresh at times over the northwest and southern interior. Forecast for Thursday The upper level low is expected to move off the southeast Queensland coast. The high will move towards New Zealand while the complex low pressure system over the northern Tasman Sea is expected to deepen with freshening winds over the southeast. Early drizzle over the southeast interior tending to isolated afternoon showers. The next ridge of high pressure will extend through central and western districts allowing for drier SW'ly winds to develop across the southern half of the state. This will generate colder temperatures from the previous night and lead to extensive early frost over the central interior, southern tropics and Atherton Tablelands. Isolated showers over far northeast Cape York Peninsula. Forecast for Friday The ridge of high pressure continues to dominate Queensland with extensive dry air. Apart from isolated drizzle or showers over the southeast Darling Downs, most of the state should be dry and cool. Isolated showers persisting over northeast Cape York Peninsula. Extensive early frost over the interior, including the Atherton Tablelands and southeast inland. Freshening southwest winds over southeast Queensland with strong winds offshore at night. Forecast for Saturday The next high is expected to move into central Australia, maintaining a ridge across the state with dry air and lighter winds over the interior. Isolated showers persisting over northeast Cape York Peninsula, fine elsewhere. Extensive early frost over the interior, including the Atherton Tablelands and southeast inland. Strong southwest winds easing during the morning off the southeast Queensland coast. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday A ridge is expected to persist across the state. On Sunday the airflow is expected to turn more onshore in the tropics, with increasing moisture levels and isolated showers developing along the north tropical coast. Dry over the remainder of the state with extensive frost areas inland. During Monday and Tuesday, onshore winds are likely to extend south towards the central coast with increasing moisture and showers. Fine over most of the interior with areas of frost. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Wednesday.
