Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jun 14/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for Southeast Gulf of
Carpentaria waters.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A large high west of Tasmania directs a cool S to SE'ly airflow over much of
Queensland. A low over the Coral Sea extends a trough towards the New South
Wales coast to a smaller east coast low. This trough and coastal low is expected
to drift further south and eventually move offshore tomorrow. An upper level low
also occurs over southern Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Showers and drizzle over the southern and SE interior, possible isolated
thunderstorms near the southern border later today. Dry over the remainder of
the state apart from a little light rain in the northern tropics. Moderate to
fresh S/SE winds over the tropics, cool to cold over southern Queensland with
moderate SW/SE winds.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high will move east over the southern Tasman Sea while the upper level
low moves over southeast Queensland. The east coast low on the N.S.W coast will
move SE offshore. Increasing instability over the southeast will lead to
isolated afternoon showers. Early drizzle over the southern interior again
tending the showers in the afternoon and possible thunderstorms over the Darling
Downs. Dry over the remainder of the state apart from isolated showers in the
northern tropics. A chilly morning over the southern tropics with early frost.
Moderate to fresh SE winds across the tropics, strong over southern Gulf waters
in the morning. Moderate SW/SW winds over southern Queensland and cool to cold.
Forecast for Thursday
The upper level low is expected to clear the Southeast Coast. The high will
move towards New Zealand and a new depression will form over the Coral Sea.
Early drizzle over the southeast interior tending to isolated afternoon showers.
The next ridge of high pressure will extend through central and western
districts allowing for drier SW'ly winds to develop across the southern half of
the state. This will generate colder temperatures from the previous night and
leading to extensive early frost for Wednesday over the central interior,
southern tropics and Atherton Tablelands. Isolated showers over far northeast
Cape York Peninsula.
Forecast for Friday
The ridge of high pressure continues to dominate Queensland with extensive
dry air. Apart from isolated drizzle or showers over the southeast Darling
Downs, most of the state should be dry and cool. Isolated showers persisting
over northeast Cape York Peninsula. Extensive early frost over the interior,
including the Atherton Tablelands and southeast inland. Freshening SW winds over
the SE region with strong winds overnight.
Forecast for Saturday
The next small high will enter western Queensland along the ridge,
maintaining the dry air over the state and introducing lighter winds. Isolated
showers in the northern topics, dry over the remainder of the state. Extensive
early frost over the interior, including the SE and the southern tropics. Early
strong SW winds easing on the SE coast.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
Sunday, as the SE'ly airflow turns more easterly in the tropics, moisture
levels will increase and showers will redevelop about the NE tropical coast. Dry
over the remainder of the state. Monday, winds turning more easterly about the
central coast now with increasing moisture and shower development. Inland frost
decreasing. Tuesday, showers about the whole of the east coast with moist E/NE
winds. Some showers penetrating inland. Fine over most of the interior with
reduced early frost. A dry SW'ly change will move into western districts.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Wednesday.
