Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jun 13/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for Southeast Gulf of
Carpentaria waters.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A large high west of Tasmania directs a cool S to SE'ly airflow over much of
Queensland. A low over the Coral Sea extends a trough towards the far northern
New South Wales coast with a small low. This trough and coastal low is expected
to drift further south over the next couple of days and deepen. An upper level
low over the southeast Queensland interior.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Isolated showers and morning drizzle over the central and southern interior.
Scattered showers and isolated afternoon thunderstorms over the Warrego, Maranoa
and western Darling Downs. Dry over the remainder of the state apart from
isolated showers over northeast Cape York Peninsula. A cool day across most of
the state. A cold morning over the tropical interior with isolated early frosts.
Light to moderate SW to SE winds, fresh at times over the west and northwest.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high will move east over the southern Tasman Sea while the upper level
low moves over southeast Queensland. Increasing instability over the southeast
will lead to isolated afternoon showers. Early drizzle over the southern
interior with isolated showers over the greater area in the afternoon. A few
afternoon thunderstorms possible over the southeast inland. Fine over the
remainder of the state apart from isolated showers over far northeast Cape York
Peninsula. A cold morning over the tropical interior with isolated early frosts.
Strong S to SE winds over the southern Gulf in the morning.
Forecast for Thursday
The upper level low is expected to clear the Southeast Coast. The high will
move towards New Zealand. Early drizzle over the southeast interior tending to
isolated afternoon showers in the afternoon. The next ridge of high pressure
will extend through central and western districts allowing for drier SW'ly winds
to develop across the southern half of the state. This will generate colder
temperatures from the previous night and extensive early frost over the central
interior, southern tropics and Atherton Tablelands. Isolated showers over far
northeast Cape York Peninsula.
Forecast for Friday
The ridge of high pressure continues to dominate Queensland with extensive
dry air. Apart from isolated drizzle or showers over the southeast Darling
Downs, most of the state should be dry and cool. Isolated showers persisting
over northeast Cape York Peninsula. Extensive early frost over the interior,
including the Atherton Tablelands and southeast inland.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
On Saturday the next high moves into western Queensland along the ridge axis
and maintains the dry conditions over the state apart from the far northeast
where isolated showers are expected to continue. By Sunday the southeast
airstream over the northern tropics tends more easterly with increasing showers
about the northeast tropical coast, otherwise dry over the remainder of the
state. On Monday moisture continues to increase about the central coast as winds
also tend more easterly with isolated showers developing, and continuing along
the northeast coast. Dry over the remainder. Extensive early frost areas are
expected over most of the interior.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Tuesday.
