Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jun 13/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for Southeastern Gulf
waters.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A large high over the Great Australian Bight directs a cool S to SE'ly
airflow over much of Queensland. A low over the Coral Sea extends a trough
towards the northeast coast of New South Wales with a weak small low. This
trough and coastal low is expected to drift further south over the next few days
and deepen. An another low in the upper levels over southern Queensland is
expected to persist over the next few days.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Isolated showers generally over the southern and SE region this evening with
some thunderstorms over the Darling Downs and the Maranoa district. Dry over the
remainder of the state apart from isolated showers in the northern tropics.
Moderate to fresh S/SE winds the tropics, light moderate SE/SW winds over
southern Queensland.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high is expected to move over Tasmania, while the trough over the
northern New South Wales coast is expected to continue to drift south. A cool S
to SE'ly airstream will continue to persist most of Queensland. The upper level
low is expected to remain slow moving over the southern interior. Early showers
or drizzle over the southern interior, expanding to isolated showers generally
over the SE and southern region with a few thunderstorms in the south in the
afternoon. A chilly morning over the southern tropics with possible early frost.
Dry over the remainder of the state with isolated showers again in the northern
tropics.
Forecast for Wednesday
The southern high will move east over the southern Tasman Sea while the upper
level low moves over SE Queensland. Increasing instability over the SE will lead
to isolated afternoon showers. Early drizzle over the southern interior
generally then expanded to isolated showers over the greater area in the
afternoon. A few afternoon thunderstorms possible over the Darling Downs. Fine
over the remainder of the state and no change in the tropics. Strong SE winds
over the southern Gulf in the morning.
Forecast for Thursday
The upper level low is expected to clear the SE coast with decreasing
weather. The southern high will move towards New Zealand. Early drizzle over the
SE interior tending to isolated afternoon showers in the afternoon. The next
ridge of higher pressure will extend through central and western districts
allowing for drier SW'ly winds to develop across the southern half of the state.
This will generate colder temperatures from the previous night and extensive
early frost over the central interior and the southern tropics. No change in the
far northern tropics.
Forecast for Friday
The ridge of high pressure continues to dominate Queensland with extensive
dry air. Apart from some isolated drizzle or showers in the southern Darling
Downs, most of the state is dry and cool. Again some isolated showers remaining
in the northern tropics. Extensive early frost over the interior, and now
expanding to the SE region.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
Saturday, the next high moves into western Queensland along the ridge axis
and maintains the dry conditions over the state apart from the far north.
Extensive early frost the interior as well as the SE region. By Sunday the SE
airstream over the northern tropics tends more easterly with increasing showers
about the NE tropical coast, otherwise dry over the remainder of the state.
Monday, moisture continues to increase about the central coast as winds also
tend more easterly with isolated showers developing. Dry over the remainder.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Tuesday.
