MELBOURNE - Jun 13/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for Southeastern Gulf waters. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A large high over the Great Australian Bight directs a cool S to SE'ly airflow over much of Queensland. A low over the Coral Sea extends a trough towards the northeast coast of New South Wales with a weak small low. This trough and coastal low is expected to drift further south over the next few days and deepen. An another low in the upper levels over southern Queensland is expected to persist over the next few days. Forecast for the rest of Monday Isolated showers generally over the southern and SE region this evening with some thunderstorms over the Darling Downs and the Maranoa district. Dry over the remainder of the state apart from isolated showers in the northern tropics. Moderate to fresh S/SE winds the tropics, light moderate SE/SW winds over southern Queensland. Forecast for Tuesday The high is expected to move over Tasmania, while the trough over the northern New South Wales coast is expected to continue to drift south. A cool S to SE'ly airstream will continue to persist most of Queensland. The upper level low is expected to remain slow moving over the southern interior. Early showers or drizzle over the southern interior, expanding to isolated showers generally over the SE and southern region with a few thunderstorms in the south in the afternoon. A chilly morning over the southern tropics with possible early frost. Dry over the remainder of the state with isolated showers again in the northern tropics. Forecast for Wednesday The southern high will move east over the southern Tasman Sea while the upper level low moves over SE Queensland. Increasing instability over the SE will lead to isolated afternoon showers. Early drizzle over the southern interior generally then expanded to isolated showers over the greater area in the afternoon. A few afternoon thunderstorms possible over the Darling Downs. Fine over the remainder of the state and no change in the tropics. Strong SE winds over the southern Gulf in the morning. Forecast for Thursday The upper level low is expected to clear the SE coast with decreasing weather. The southern high will move towards New Zealand. Early drizzle over the SE interior tending to isolated afternoon showers in the afternoon. The next ridge of higher pressure will extend through central and western districts allowing for drier SW'ly winds to develop across the southern half of the state. This will generate colder temperatures from the previous night and extensive early frost over the central interior and the southern tropics. No change in the far northern tropics. Forecast for Friday The ridge of high pressure continues to dominate Queensland with extensive dry air. Apart from some isolated drizzle or showers in the southern Darling Downs, most of the state is dry and cool. Again some isolated showers remaining in the northern tropics. Extensive early frost over the interior, and now expanding to the SE region. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday Saturday, the next high moves into western Queensland along the ridge axis and maintains the dry conditions over the state apart from the far north. Extensive early frost the interior as well as the SE region. By Sunday the SE airstream over the northern tropics tends more easterly with increasing showers about the NE tropical coast, otherwise dry over the remainder of the state. Monday, moisture continues to increase about the central coast as winds also tend more easterly with isolated showers developing. Dry over the remainder.
