MELBOURNE - Jun 12/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for Southeastern Gulf waters. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A large high over the Great Australian Bight directs a cool S to SE'ly airflow over much of Queensland. A low over the Coral Sea extends a deepening surface trough towards the far northern New South Wales coast just south of the Queensland border. This trough is expected to move slowly south over New South Wales waters later today and during Tuesday. An upper level low lies over the southern interior of Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Monday Showers and drizzle areas south of about Charleville to Brisbane, with possible isolated thunderstorms during the afternoon. Isolated showers and morning drizzle areas elsewhere south of about Mackay to Longreach. Mostly fine over the northern half of the state with only morning drizzle and very isolated showers near the east coast north of about Cairns. Cool to cold over much of the state with light to moderate SW to SE winds, fresh at times over western districts and along the far southern coast. Forecast for Tuesday The high is expected to move over Tasmania, while the trough over the northern New South Wales coast is expected to continue to drift south. A cool S to SE'ly airstream will continue to extend over most of Queensland. The upper level low is expected to remain slow moving over the southern interior. Isolated showers and drizzle areas will occur over the interior south of about Longreach, with showers tending more scattered and possible local thunder southeast of about Quilpie near the upper level low. Morning drizzle and showers may also occur on the Gold Coast. Mostly fine conditions are expected elsewhere along the southeast coast with only isolated showers south of the Sunshine Coast. Fine over the northern half of the state apart from possible isolated showers along the far northeast tropical coast. Remaining cool during the day over most of the state, with a cold morning for the tropics. Forecast for Wednesday The upper level low is expected to move into the southeast Queensland interior. A new surface trough is expected to form offshore of far southern Queensland waters, with a low possibly forming on the trough off northern New South Wales. The high is expected to move into the Tasman Sea. Conditions will remain cloudy over the southern and central interior with isolated showers and drizzle areas. Instability associated with the upper level low may result in isolated afternoon thunderstorms over the interior near the Carnarvon ranges. Mostly fine conditions are expected over the southeast coast with only isolated showers south of about Brisbane. Fine elsewhere across the state apart from possible isolated showers along the far northeast tropical coast. Remaining cool during the day over most of the state, with a cold morning for the tropics and central interior. Forecast for Thursday The upper level low is expected to have weakened into a trough and should move off the southeast coast in the morning. A high over the Indian Ocean will extend a ridge across central Australia and most of Queensland. A surface trough will extend from the low off the northern New South Wales coast to a second low deepening over the northern Tasman Sea. Moist SW'ly winds will maintain cloud and drizzle areas over the southern inland border. Isolated showers will occur over the far northeast tropics in an onshore wind flow. Fine conditions will occur elsewhere under the influence of the ridge. Remaining cool during the day over most of the state, with a cold morning and some early frosts for the tropics and central interior. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday The high is expected to move slowly east over southern Australia during the outlook period, maintaining a ridge across much of Queensland. Fine conditions are therefore expected across most of the state, apart from very isolated showers along the far northeast tropical coast. Some drizzle may also occur in a moist SW'ly wind flow over the southeastern interior on Friday. The low over the northern Tasman Sea will continue to deepen as it shifts south southeast. The combination of the ridge and deepening low will most likely strengthen W to SW winds over far southern offshore waters from late Friday before easing on Sunday. Remaining cool over most of the state with widespread early morning frosts over the interior, particularly in central and southern parts. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Monday.
