Australia -- Victoria Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jun 6/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A strong cold front approaching Tasmania will reach southwest Victoria this morning before moving across the State during the day. An associated deepening low pressure system will pass near southern Tasmania then track northeast to lie just east of Bass Strait on Wednesday. The low will move slowly east over the Tasman Sea on Thursday and Friday while a new high pressure system moves south of the Bight.
Forecast for the rest of TuesdayEarly morning frost over the northeast. Showers becoming more extensive from the southwest during the morning and extending to northern and eastern areas during the afternoon. Showers tending to rain areas in parts of the south and northeast. Snowfalls developing on the ranges and lowering to 500 metres overnight. Possible hail and thunder developing. Cold with northwesterly wind strengthening then turning squally southwesterly from the west and reaching gale force about the central and Gippsland coast and the eastern ranges.Wednesday 8 JuneWidespread showers in the southeast, tending to rain areas at times. Scattered showers in the southwest. Isolated showers over the north although fine over the far northwest. Hail and thunder in the east. Snow showers above 500 metres at first, contracting to above 900 metres by evening. Cold with fresh and gusty south to southwesterly winds.Thursday 9 JuneWidespread showers in the southeast. Scattered showers in remaining southern and mountain areas. Isolated showers in the north but fine over the northwest. Snow showers above 900 metres in the morning before being confined to 1200 metres and above later. Cold with a fresh to strong southerly wind easing in the west.Friday 10 JuneScattered showers on and south of the ranges, becoming isolated later in the day and falling as snow on the Alpine peaks. Fine and sunny north of the divide. Remaining cool to cold with moderate southerly winds, fresh at times along the coast.The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Tuesday.Product IDV10310
