Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jun 5/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A weak area of high pressure over most of Queensland. A cold front is moving
over southeast Australia, with an associated upper level trough extending areas
of high cloud over southern Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Isolated showers over northeast Cape York Peninsula. Isolated showers and
drizzle areas about the tropical coast, extending into the eastern tropical
interior during the day. High cloud areas over the southern half of the state
but remaining fine. Light to moderate E to SE winds across the northern tropics
with light winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Tuesday
A significant cold front moves over Victoria with a cold outbreak developing
over southeast Australia. A weaker trough and southwesterly wind change
associated with this front will enter the western and southern Queensland. High
cloud over the southern half of the state will contract east early, before
increasing again from the west during the day with possibly some light rain
developing over the far west late in the evening. An onshore airflow onto the
tropical coast is expected to continue with isolated showers and drizzle areas,
also spreading into the eastern tropical and central interior. Areas of frost
about the Darling Downs and Granite Belt.
Forecast for Wednesday
The cold front and associated deep low pressure system is expected to move
into the Tasman Sea as a large high moves over the western Great Australian
Bight. This will push the surface trough across southeast Queensland with cooler
day time temperatures expected over far southern Queensland. An upper trough
lying over southeast Australia is expected to continue producing middle and high
level cloud over the southern half of the state with light rain patches
spreading across the west and central interior. The onshore airflow onto the
tropical coast is expected to continue with isolated showers. Early frost
patches about the Granite Belt.
Forecast for Thursday
The low pressure system and cold front is expected to move very slowly east
over the Tasman Sea as the large high remains slow moving over the western Great
Australian Bight. Cool to cold southerly winds over southern Queensland with
extensive frost areas over the southern and southeast interior. The upper trough
over southeast Australia will begin to intensify, thickening higher level cloud
over western Queensland with patchy rain extending across the west and central
interior of the state. The onshore airflow onto the tropical coast and ranges is
expected to continue with isolated showers.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The low pressure system and cold front are expected to move east over the
Tasman Sea towards New Zealand and weaken. The large high is expected to move
only very slowly east across the Great Australian Bight. The upper trough over
southeast Australia is expected to intensify with an upper level low over
central Australia moving across southwest Queensland or western New South Wales
during the weekend. As a result, areas of middle and high level cloud over the
west and central interior will continue to thicken with rain areas increasing
from the northwest during Friday and Saturday, spreading across the tropics and
towards the southeast late Saturday and on Sunday. Becoming fine over western
Queensland late Saturday and on Sunday as the upper trough moves east and drier
southerly S'ly winds develop. Cool to cold conditions over most of the state,
with early frost areas over the southeast and southern interior on Friday
morning.
