MELBOURNE - Jun 2/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for waters from Sandy Cape to Point Danger, excluding Hervey Bay and Moreton Bay. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high pressure system near New Zealand extends a firm ridge into the Queensland interior. The high will move to the southeast of New Zealand by Friday, weakening the ridge. A low lies over the southern Coral Sea to the south of New Caledonia and is expected to deepen as it moves southwest today. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Scattered showers and drizzle areas over the Gold Coast and southern border ranges, easing late afternoon and evening. Morning fog patches elsewhere over the southeast, with isolated showers developing in the afternoon. Isolated showers over Torres Strait. Fine elsewhere. Early frost patches over higher ground in the eastern tropics, and also possibly over the southern interior near the Carnarvon ranges. Light to moderate SW to SE winds, fresh and gusty at times along the southern coast during the day. Forecast for Friday The high will move to the southeast of New Zealand, while the low will weaken and drift southeast. Southerly winds will therefore ease over southern Queensland waters. Fine conditions are expected across the interior under the influence of a weak ridge of high pressure. Fine conditions are also expected over the southeast coast apart from some isolated showers during the morning over Fraser Island. Mostly fine conditions will persist through the tropics with only isolated showers on the northeast tropical coast and possibly developing on the central coast and islands late in the day. Early morning frost is possible over higher ground in the eastern tropics. Forecast for Saturday A new high over the southern Indian Ocean will extend a ridge and fine conditions over much of Queensland. An upper level trough will extend high cloud through southern parts of the state, though with no rain due to dry W'ly winds at the surface. Isolated showers will occur in an onshore wind flow over northern Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. Mostly fine conditions will occur elsewhere on the east coast with only isolated showers north of about Rockhampton, chiefly on the islands. Early frost is possible on the Granite Belt given lighter winds and clear skies. Forecast for Sunday The high will remain slow moving to the southwest of Western Australia, maintaining a ridge and fine conditions across much of the Queensland. Some high cloud will persist over central and southern parts of the state though with no rain due to dry conditions continuing at the surface. Isolated showers will continue over northern Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. A weak trough offshore will increase the chance of isolated showers moving on to the central and east tropical coasts. Early frost will most likely occur again on the Granite Belt. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The high will move slowly east towards the Great Australian Bight, maintaining a ridge over much of Queensland. A trough will move east over southern Queensland on Tuesday, most likely pushing off the southeast coast on Wednesday. Some isolated showers may occur near the southern border due to the passage of this trough. Conditions should remain fine elsewhere over the interior and southeast under the influence of the ridge. Mostly fine conditions will continue in the tropics with only isolated showers near the coast. Early frosts will remain likely on the Granite Belt, and also affect a larger area through the southern and southeast interior from Tuesday morning. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Thursday.
