Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Apr 28/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between
Lockhart River and Cape Moreton.
Flood warnings are current for various rivers and streams.

Weather Situation
A large high [1033 hPa] over the southern Tasman Sea extends a firm ridge
along the east Queensland coast. The high is expected to maintain its intensity
as it shifts towards New Zealand today. An upper-level low lies offshore of the
Capricorn coast and will move further southeast away from the coast today. A
deepening surface low lies well offshore over the central Coral Sea and is
expected to move south over the next few days.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Isolated showers along the east Queensland coast, more frequent along the
southern coast and adjacent inland with possible local thunder in the afternoon
and evening. Isolated afternoon showers over the Peninsula district and through
the eastern interior. Dangerous surf conditions along the coast Fraser Island
and south. Daytime temperatures below average over much of the state. Fresh and
gusty S to SE winds along the east Queensland coast, strong at times. Moderate
to fresh E to SE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Saturday
The high will move to the southeast of New Zealand, relaxing the ridge along
the east Queensland coast with winds easing north of about Fraser Island. The
surface low well offshore over the Coral Sea will intensify further and move
south southwest, producing strong S'ly winds over waters south of Fraser Island.
Isolated showers are likely in the onshore wind flow over the northeast tropics,
with more scattered shower activity expected along the exposed southern coast.
Fine conditions elsewhere. Dangerous surf conditions remain likely along the
exposed Queensland coast Fraser Island and south. Temperatures will remain below
average over much of the state, particularly in the west.
Forecast for Sunday
The surface low will continue deepening as it moves south into the Tasman
Sea. Winds will shift drier SW'ly over southeastern Queensland and possibly be
strong over far southern offshore waters depending on the location of the low.
The low will also increase SE'ly swells further with dangerous surf conditions
on Queensland beaches Fraser Island and south. Isolated showers will continue in
the onshore wind flow over the northeast tropics, chiefly north of Cairns. High
cloud will increase over the southwest ahead of the next upper level trough with
little or no rain. Fine conditions elsewhere.
Forecast for Monday
The low will move further south over the Tasman Sea, with swells gradually
abating and dangerous surf conditions slowly easing along the southern
Queensland coast. The upper level trough will approach southwestern parts of the
state, extending high cloud through western districts and the southern interior
though with little or no rain. Isolated thunderstorms may develop late in the
day over the far southern interior as a surface trough develops. Isolated
showers are expected over the northeast tropics in the onshore wind flow,
chiefly north of Cairns. Fine conditions are expected elsewhere in a dry S'ly
wind flow.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The upper level trough and associated surface trough will move east over
central and southern Queensland, most likely contracting off the coast late
Tuesday or early Wednesday. A cloud band with showers and isolated thunderstorms
will accompany the trough. Dry and cool S'ly winds will extend over the state
behind the trough from a high moving east over southern Australia. Fine
conditions are therefore expected over much of the state from Wednesday with
only very isolated showers over the far northeastern tropics and possible
drizzle areas over the southeastern interior.

Friday.
