MELBOURNE - Apr 27/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Lockhart River and Point Danger, including Hervey Bay and Moreton Bay. Flood warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A large high [1034 hPa] over the southern Tasman Sea extends a firm ridge along the east Queensland coast. The high is expected to remain slow moving today before shifting east towards New Zealand on Friday. An upper-level low lies over the central interior of the state and is expected to contract off the coast later today. A surface low is expected to develop over the central Coral Sea later today before shifting rapidly south southeast on Friday. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over central districts east of about Clermont and northern parts of the Wide Bay, with some moderate falls likely over the central coast and islands. Scattered showers elsewhere along the east coast, more frequent along the southern coast. Isolated showers over the eastern and central interior, tending scattered in the afternoon over southeast inland parts with possible isolated thunderstorms. Isolated showers and afternoon thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula. Fine in the west. Daytime temperatures below the April average over much of the state, particularly central and southeast parts. Fresh to strong and gusty SE winds along the east coast. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Friday The upper-level low will move slowly southeast into the southern Coral Sea. The high will move over New Zealand, while the surface low over the central Coral Sea is expected to intensify and move rapidly south southeast. Winds should gradually ease along the east Queensland coast south of about Sandy Cape as the high shifts further away but could still be strong at times depending on the intensity of the surface low. Showers will become isolated along the east coast and adjacent inland north of about Fraser Island. More scattered shower activity and possible isolated thunderstorms are expected along the southern coast, extending to southeast inland parts in the afternoon. Remaining fine in the west. Temperatures will continue to be below average over much of the state away. Forecast for Saturday The high will move to the southeast of New Zealand, relaxing the ridge along the east Queensland coast with winds easing north of about Fraser Island. The surface low will continue to intensify and move south southeast, most likely producing strong S'ly winds over waters south of Fraser Island. Isolated showers are likely in the onshore wind flow over the northeast tropics, with more scattered shower activity expected along the exposed southern coast. Fine conditions are expected elsewhere. Temperatures will remain below average over much of the state. Forecast for Sunday The surface low will continue deepening as it moves south into the Tasman Sea. Winds will shift drier SW'ly over southeastern Queensland and possibly be strong over far southern offshore waters depending on the location of the low. The low will also increase SE'ly swells over southern Queensland waters. Isolated showers will continue in the onshore wind flow over the northeast tropics, chiefly north of Cairns. High cloud will increase over the southwest ahead of the next upper level trough though with little or no rain. Fine conditions elsewhere. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The surface low moves towards New Zealand, with swells gradually easing over southern Queensland waters. A new high will move east over southern Australia during the outlook period, gradually extending a ridge into western Queensland. The new upper level trough will move east over central and southern Queensland, most likely pushing off the coast late Tuesday. High cloud and some patchy rain will accompany this trough, with possible isolated thunderstorms, chiefly near the southern border. Conditions will remain mostly fine in the tropics with only isolated showers expected north of about Cairns, extending over the tropical coast south of Cairns from Wednesday as the wind flow tends more onshore. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Thursday.
