Weather Situation
A high [1028 hPa] near Tasmania extends a ridge along the east Queensland
coast. The ridge is expected to strengthen as the high moves into the southern
Tasman Sea today and intensifies. An upper level trough is expected to move into
southern Queensland during today.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Isolated showers about the east coast, tending scattered along the north
tropical and southern coasts. Isolated afternoon and evening showers over the
tropical, central and southern interior. Scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms about Cape York Peninsula. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds along
the east coast. Mostly light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high should intensify a little further as it remains over the southern
Tasman sea, maintaining fresh to strong southeast winds and scattered showers
along the east coast of Queensland. Showers and isolated thunderstorms can be
expected over the southern interior during the afternoon and evening, assisted
by the upper trough moving over southern Queensland and surface trough over the
far west. Isolated afternoon and evening showers over the tropical interior,
with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over northern Cape York
Peninsula. Generally below average daytime temperatures are expected away from
the northern tropics.
Forecast for Wednesday
The large high remains slow moving over the southern Tasman sea, maintaining
fresh to strong southeast winds and scattered showers about the east coast of
Queensland. Isolated afternoon and evening showers across the tropical and
southeast interior. Scattered showers with some afternoon and evening
thunderstorms over central districts and the southwest as the upper trough
intensifies and moves over these regions. Scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms over northern Cape York Peninsula. Below average daytime
temperatures are expected away from the northern tropics.
Forecast for Thursday
The large high is expected to move slowly towards the southeast, though fresh
to strong southeast winds are expected to continue along the east coast of
Queensland with scattered showers. Isolated afternoon and evening showers over
the eastern interior, with the upper trough moving off the Capricornia coast at
night. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about far northern Cape York
Peninsula. Below average temperatures are expected away from the northern
tropics.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The high should drift slowly southeast towards New Zealand while the upper
trough will continue to move east away from Queensland. The firm ridge will
begin weakening, easing the winds along the east coast over the weekend.
Generally only isolated showers expected about the east coast, though scattered
along the southern coast on Friday. Isolated thunderstorms may occur about far
northern Cape York Peninsula. Temperatures expected to remain generally below
average.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Monday.
