MELBOURNE - Apr 24/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1027 hPa] lies over southeast Australia and extends a ridge along the east Queensland coast. The ridge is expected to strengthen as the high moves into the southern Tasman Sea by Monday and intensifies. Forecast for the rest of Sunday Isolated showers about the eastern parts of the state, tending scattered along the north tropical and southern coasts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about Cape York Peninsula. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds along the east coast. Mostly light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Monday Isolated showers about the east coast, tending scattered along the north tropical and southern coasts. Isolated afternoon and evening showers over the eastern interior. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about Cape York Peninsula. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds in eastern districts, strong at times along the coast. Mostly light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Tuesday The high should intensify a little further as it remains over the southern Tasman sea, maintaining fresh to strong southeast winds and scattered showers along the east coast of Queensland. More isolated showers can be expected about the central and southern interior during the afternoon and evening, assisted by a new upper trough moving over southern Queensland. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the far north of the Peninsula district. Forecast for Wednesday The high will maintain strength as it remains slow moving over the southern Tasman sea, maintaining fresh to strong southeast winds and scattered showers along the east coast of Queensland. Isolated afternoon and evening showers across the central and southern interior as the upper trough moves over these regions. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the far north of the Peninsula district. Forecast for Thursday The high will remain intense while moving slowly towards the southeast, though fresh to strong southeast winds are expected to continue along the east coast of Queensland with scattered showers. Isolated afternoon and evening showers across the central and southern interior, with the upper trough moving into eastern districts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the far north of the Peninsula district. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday The high should drift slowly southeast towards New Zealand while the upper trough will move offshore. The firm ridge will begin weakening, easing the winds along the east coast over the weekend. Showers will continue about the east coast, tending more isolated over the eastern interior. Showers and thunderstorms will continue over the Peninsula district, but conditions should remain fine in the west. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Monday.
