MELBOURNE - Apr 16/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood warnings are current. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high in the Great Australian Bight will move east, reaching the Tasman Sea late Sunday and gradually strengthening a ridge along the east Queensland coast. A surface trough lies over the eastern interior of Queensland and is expected to contract a little west to extend from the Gulf Country into the Maranoa and Warrego district by late Sunday. An upper level trough is expected to intensify over western Queensland on Sunday, with an associated upper low moving north into the Channel Country. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Scattered showers and possible isolated thunderstorms over the central interior northwest of Emerald. Isolated showers over remaining central and southern parts of the state, with possible isolated thunderstorms, chiefly on the southern border ranges. Isolated showers about the eastern tropics, tending scattered with isolated thunderstorms about the far northern Peninsula. Fine and cool in the west. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds along the east coast and through western districts. Light, mostly SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Sunday Isolated showers and thunderstorms over central districts and the southeastern interior, increasing to scattered during the afternoon and increasing further to thundery rain areas at night, particularly over the Central Highlands, northern Maranoa and northern Darling Downs where heavy falls may develop. Scattered showers along the southern coast with the chance of local thunder. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms in the southwest. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the northern Peninsula. Isolated showers elsewhere over the eastern tropics, tending scattered over southern inland parts in the afternoon. Fine in the northwest. A cool day over central and southern districts. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds in the west and along the east coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Monday The upper level low will most likely move into southern parts of the Central West district. This system should produce rain areas and thunderstorms over southern and central inland parts of the state east of about Longreach to Cunnamulla. Heavy falls are most likely through the northern Maranoa, southern Central Highlands and Coalfields, far southeastern Central West and northwestern Darling Downs districts. Showers will also most likely increase to thundery rain areas over the Central Coast and Capricornia districts, with possible heavy falls developing near the coast due to a surface trough forming just offshore. Rain areas and isolated thunderstorms are expected over the Southeast Coast and Wide Bay and Burnett districts, with moderate falls north of about Brisbane. Isolated showers will continue about the eastern tropics, with isolated thunderstorms likely over northern Cape York Peninsula. Maximum temperatures will remain cool over southern and central parts of the state. Forecast for Tuesday The upper level trough will most likely move southeast while weakening and push off the southeast coast in the evening. The surface trough lying off the Capricorn coast should also gradually move east over the Coral Sea. Rain areas and thunderstorms should therefore gradually weaken and contract east over central and southeastern parts of the state. Heavy falls are still possible in the early hours of the morning over the central interior, northern Maranoa and near the Capricorn and Wide Bay coasts. Isolated showers will continue over southern and central parts in the wake of the rain band. Isolated showers are also expected over the eastern tropics, tending scattered over the northern Peninsula with isolated thunderstorms. Below average maximum temperatures will continue over the southern and central parts of the state. Forecast for Wednesday The upper level trough should continue to move east over the Coral Sea, with conditions stabilising further over southeastern and central Queensland. Isolated showers will continue in an onshore wind flow over the east coast, developing through the eastern interior in the afternoon. More widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected over the Peninsula district due to a deep, moist airstream. Fine conditions are expected in the west. Daytime temperatures will start to climb back to near average over southern and central Queensland. Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday A large high will move slowly east over the Great Australian Bight into southeastern Australia, extending a ridge and onshore winds onto the east coast of Queensland. Isolated showers will therefore continue over eastern districts, more widespread through the Peninsula with isolated thunderstorms. Conditions should remain fine in the west and through the southern interior. Showers may increase over the southeast coast on Saturday in response to an upper level trough moving over the area. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Sunday.
