Warning Summary at issue time
Flood warnings are current for the Georgina and Diamantina
Rivers.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1025 hPa] near New Zealand extends a weak ridge along the east coast
of Queensland. Another high over New South Wales is directing dry air over much
of the state. A weak monsoon trough lies over the northern Coral Sea.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent inland. Scattered showers
and isolated thunderstorms over northern Cape York Peninsula, with rain areas
near Torres Strait. Fine over the rest of the state. Light to moderate SE to NE
winds along the east coast. Mostly light winds over the interior.
Forecast for Thursday
Isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent inland north of about
Gympie. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over northern Cape York
Peninsula, with rain areas near Torres Strait. Cloudy with patchy thundery rain
spreading across the southwest. Fine over the rest of the state. Early morning
fogs about the east coast to ranges. A cool morning over the west and southern
inland. Light to moderate mostly SE to NE winds.
Forecast for Friday
An upper level trough is expected to move across southern Queensland. An
associated surface trough will move east and lie from the northwest to the
southern interior. Cloudy with areas of thundery rain spreading across the
interior south of about Longreach, reaching the Darling Downs and Granite Belt
in the afternoon and evening. Isolated afternoon and evening showers over the
tropical interior east of the surface trough. Isolated showers about the east
coast and adjacent inland. Continuing unstable over northern Cape York Peninsula
with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms, with rain areas near Torres
Strait due to the monsoon trough. Day time temperatures below average over the
southern interior due to cloud.
Forecast for Saturday
The surface trough should move east a little over the central and southern
interior. The upper trough will move east and contract the thundery rain areas
into southeast Queensland. However, further showers and isolated thunderstorms
should occur over the central and southern interior nearer the surface trough.
Isolated showers continuing about the tropical coast and interior east of the
surface trough. Continuing unstable over northern Cape York Peninsula with
scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms, with rain areas near Torres Strait
due to the monsoon trough. A surface trough over the Coral Sea is expected to
deepen while moving southwest, and combined with a high near Tasmania will
assist in increasing S to SE winds along most of the east Queensland coast. Cool
day time temperatures over the central and southern interior.
Forecast for Sunday
A new and more significant upper level trough will move over the southern and
central Queensland interior. The surface trough will drift westwards a little
due to the upper trough. Showers and thunderstorms over the central, southern
and southeast interior east of the surface trough, increasing to areas of rain
late in the day or night as the upper trough strengthens. Isolated afternoon and
evening showers over the tropical interior east of the surface trough.
Increasing showers about the east coast in the onshore flow due to the trough
over the Coral Sea and the high over New South Wales. Continuing unstable over
northern Cape York Peninsula with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms.
A cool day over most of the interior.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The upper trough is expected to move east during Monday and pass off the east
coast during Tuesday morning. Areas of thundery rain and showers over central
and southern Queensland are expected to move off the east coast Tuesday morning.
Showers are expected to linger over southern Queensland during Tuesday but
generally contract to near the coast on Wednesday. Isolated showers continuing
about the tropical coast with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms
continuing over northern Cape York Peninsula. Remaining cool over most of
central and southern Queensland, particularly on Monday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Thursday.
