MELBOURNE - Apr 13/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood warnings are current for the Georgina and Diamantina Rivers. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1025 hPa] near New Zealand extends a weak ridge along the east coast of Queensland. Another high over New South Wales is directing dry air over much of the state. A weak monsoon trough lies over the northern Coral Sea. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent inland. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over northern Cape York Peninsula, with rain areas near Torres Strait. Fine over the rest of the state. Light to moderate SE to NE winds along the east coast. Mostly light winds over the interior. Forecast for Thursday Isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent inland north of about Gympie. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over northern Cape York Peninsula, with rain areas near Torres Strait. Cloudy with patchy thundery rain spreading across the southwest. Fine over the rest of the state. Early morning fogs about the east coast to ranges. A cool morning over the west and southern inland. Light to moderate mostly SE to NE winds. Forecast for Friday An upper level trough is expected to move across southern Queensland. An associated surface trough will move east and lie from the northwest to the southern interior. Cloudy with areas of thundery rain spreading across the interior south of about Longreach, reaching the Darling Downs and Granite Belt in the afternoon and evening. Isolated afternoon and evening showers over the tropical interior east of the surface trough. Isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent inland. Continuing unstable over northern Cape York Peninsula with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms, with rain areas near Torres Strait due to the monsoon trough. Day time temperatures below average over the southern interior due to cloud. Forecast for Saturday The surface trough should move east a little over the central and southern interior. The upper trough will move east and contract the thundery rain areas into southeast Queensland. However, further showers and isolated thunderstorms should occur over the central and southern interior nearer the surface trough. Isolated showers continuing about the tropical coast and interior east of the surface trough. Continuing unstable over northern Cape York Peninsula with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms, with rain areas near Torres Strait due to the monsoon trough. A surface trough over the Coral Sea is expected to deepen while moving southwest, and combined with a high near Tasmania will assist in increasing S to SE winds along most of the east Queensland coast. Cool day time temperatures over the central and southern interior. Forecast for Sunday A new and more significant upper level trough will move over the southern and central Queensland interior. The surface trough will drift westwards a little due to the upper trough. Showers and thunderstorms over the central, southern and southeast interior east of the surface trough, increasing to areas of rain late in the day or night as the upper trough strengthens. Isolated afternoon and evening showers over the tropical interior east of the surface trough. Increasing showers about the east coast in the onshore flow due to the trough over the Coral Sea and the high over New South Wales. Continuing unstable over northern Cape York Peninsula with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. A cool day over most of the interior. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The upper trough is expected to move east during Monday and pass off the east coast during Tuesday morning. Areas of thundery rain and showers over central and southern Queensland are expected to move off the east coast Tuesday morning. Showers are expected to linger over southern Queensland during Tuesday but generally contract to near the coast on Wednesday. Isolated showers continuing about the tropical coast with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms continuing over northern Cape York Peninsula. Remaining cool over most of central and southern Queensland, particularly on Monday. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Thursday.
