Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Apr 12/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Flood warnings are current.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A stationary high [1027 hPa] near New Zealand extends a weak ridge along the
east coast of Queensland. Another high over South Australia is directing dry air
over much of the state. A weak monsoon trough lies over the northern parts of
the Coral Sea.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Fine over most of the state, except for some scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait, and a few isolated
showers about the remainder of the east coast. Light to moderate S to SW winds
over the western, central interior and southern districts. Light to moderate SE
to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Wednesday
A high near New Zealand should continue to extend a weak ridge and mainly
moderate SE winds along the east tropical coast of Queensland. Remaining dry and
fine over most of the state, except for a few isolated showers about the east
coast. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are again expected about
the Peninsula district and Torres Strait. Early morning fog patches about the
east coast north of about Brisbane.
Forecast for Thursday
The high near New Zealand will continue to extend a weak ridge and mainly
moderate SE winds along the tropical east coast of Queensland. Fine again over
much of the state, except for some scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms
over the Peninsula district. Patches of early morning fog and some isolated
afternoon showers about the east coast. A new upper level trough should
intensify over South Australia, resulting in increasing cloud, patchy rain and
isolated thunderstorms developing through the southern Channel Country late in
the day.
Forecast for Friday
The upper level trough near the Channel Country should intensify, and is
expected to produce thundery rain areas about the southwest and southern
interior of the state. An associated surface trough should also generate
isolated showers and thunderstorms over the Central West district. Isolated
showers over the eastern districts, tending to scattered showers with isolated
thunderstorms over the northern tropics.
Forecast for Saturday
The upper and surface troughs should remain over the southern interior of the
state, producing further thundery rain areas over the southern districts.
Isolated showers in the onshore flow about the eastern districts and the Central
Highlands. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Cape York
Peninsula, and fine in the central and northwestern districts.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
The surface trough is expected to drift further to the east during the
weekend. This trough will work with the upper level trough to maintain showers
and thunderstorms over the southern interior and to extend this activity into
eastern districts, whilst gradually clearing from western districts.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Wednesday.
