MELBOURNE - Apr 7/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood warnings are current for various rivers and streams. A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters between Lockhart River and Burnett Heads. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1033 hPa] east of Tasmania extends a firm ridge along most of the east Queensland coast. The high is expected to move slowly east across the Tasman Sea over the next few days and weaken from late today. A trough lies over the northern Coral Sea. An upper trough over southern Queensland is expected to move off the coast on Saturday. Forecast for the rest of Friday Scattered showers about the east coast, tending to isolated showers over the eastern and tropical interior during the day. More widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms over the southeast. Scattered showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over the far northern tropics. Fine over the west and southwest. Fresh to locally strong and gusty SE winds along much of the east coast. Light to moderate E to SE winds over the interior, fresh at times during the day. Forecast for Saturday The high over the Tasman Sea should weaken a little, allowing the ridge and winds along the east coast to also gradually weaken. Moderate to fresh SE winds and scattered showers persisting over much of the east coast, with more isolated showers over the adjacent inland areas. More widespread showers during the morning near the Southeast Coast as the upper trough moves offshore. Scattered showers, rain areas and isolated storms persisting over the far north. Remaining fine over the west and southwest. Forecast for Sunday The high over the Tasman Sea continues to weaken and moves east near New Zealand. As a result, the ridge along the east coast will also continues to weaken. Moderate to fresh SE winds and scattered showers about the north tropical and central coasts, tending isolated along the remaining coast. Scattered showers, rain areas and isolated storms persisting over the far north. Becoming cloudy over the southern interior ahead of a front moving over the southwest during the day with isolated showers. Forecast for Monday The high is expected to continue weakening as it moves to the southeast of New Zealand. This will continue to ease winds along the east coast. Isolated showers in the onshore airstream along the tropical coast, tending scattered over the far northern tropics, and extending into the tropical interior in the afternoon. Scattered showers, patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms over the far north of the state. The surface front and accompanying upper level trough over southern Queensland is expected to move into the southeast during the day. Showers over the southern interior, contracting to the southeast during the day with isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Cooler and dry over the southwest. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday The ridge persists along the tropical east coast with moderate to fresh SE winds and some showers, spreading into the tropical interior during the day. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the far north near the weak monsoonal trough. Mostly fine over western and southern Queensland ahead of an upper level trough moving over southern Australia during Thursday with a cloud band and the possibility of patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms affecting the far southwest. Isolated showers redeveloping near the southern Queensland coast on Thursday. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Friday.
