Weather Situation
A high [1032 hPa] east of Tasmania extends a firm ridge along most of the
east Queensland coast. The high is expected to move slowly east across the
Tasman Sea over the next few days and weaken from late Friday. A trough and weak
low lies over the northern Coral Sea and may deepen a little.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Scattered showers about the east coast, with more isolated showers about the
eastern and tropical interior during the day. Scattered showers, rain areas and
isolated thunderstorms over the northern tropics. Fine over the west and
southwest. Fresh to locally strong and gusty SE winds along much of the east
coast. Light to moderate E to SE winds over the interior, fresh at times during
the day.
Forecast for Friday
The high should move slowly east over the Tasman Sea, while maintaining a
firm ridge along the east coast of Queensland. Moderate to fresh SE winds and
scattered showers persisting over much of the east coast, with more isolated
showers over the eastern and tropical interior. More widespread showers and
isolated thunderstorms over the southeast due to an upper trough moving over
this region. Scattered showers, rain areas and isolated storms over the far
north near the monsoon trough. Remaining fine over the west and southwest.
Forecast for Saturday
The high over the Tasman Sea should weaken a little, allowing the ridge and
winds along the east coast to also gradually weaken. Moderate to fresh SE winds
and scattered showers persisting over much of the east coast, with more isolated
showers over the adjacent inland areas. More widespread showers during the
morning near the Southeast Coast as the upper trough moves offshore. Scattered
showers, rain areas and isolated storms persisting over the far north. Remaining
fine over the west and southwest.
Forecast for Sunday
The high over the Tasman Sea continues to weaken and moves east towards New
Zealand. As a result, the ridge along the east coast continues to weaken as
well. Moderate to fresh SE winds and scattered showers about the north tropical
and central coasts, tending isolated along the remaining coast. Scattered
showers, rain areas and isolated storms persisting over the far north. Fine over
the remainder of the state though becoming cloudy over the southern interior
ahead of a surface trough moving over the southwest during the day.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The high is expected to continue weakening as it moves to the southeast of
New Zealand. This will continue to ease winds along the east coast and contract
most of the shower activity into the tropics by Monday. Scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms continuing over the far north of the state. However,
isolated afternoon and evening showers are possible ahead of the surface trough
over central and southeast districts. A more significant surface and upper
trough is expected to approach the southwest of the state late Tuesday and
Wednesday, accompanied by cloud and the possibility of some patchy rain and
isolated thunderstorms.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
