MELBOURNE - Apr 4/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood warnings are current for various rivers and streams. A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters between Cape Melville and Point Danger, including Hervey and Moreton Bays. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A surface trough lies east of Cape York Peninsula. A strong high [1035 hPa] over the eastern Great Australian Bight should drift slowly east over the next few days, whilst maintaining a strong ridge of high pressure along the east coast of Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Scattered showers continuing about the east coast, with more isolated showers about the nearby inland areas. Possible local thunder about the southeast and Wide Bay coasts. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Far North Queensland, with just the chance of some moderate to locally heavy falls near the east coast north of about Port Douglas. Cloudy periods, though with only isolated showers about the Gulf Country and Northern Goldfields districts. Fine over the southern and central interior. Fresh to strong and gusty SE'ly winds along much of the east coast. Light to moderate E to SE winds over the interior, fresh at times during the day in the west. Forecast for Wednesday The high should weaken slightly as it drifts over Tasmania, but is expected to remain strong enough to maintain the fresh to strong SE'ly winds and scattered showers along much of Queensland's east coast. More isolated showers about the nearby inland areas. Possible local thunder about the southeast and Wide Bay coasts. An upper level trough should maintain cloudy conditions over the Gulf Country and Northern Goldfields, though only isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected over those districts. More widespread showers, isolated storms, and patchy rain areas over the Peninsula and North Tropical Coast districts, with moderate to locally heavy falls possible near the east coast north of about Port Douglas. Fine over the southern and central interior. Fresh to strong and gusty SE'ly winds along much of the east coast. Light to moderate E to SE winds over the interior, fresh at times during the day in the west. Forecast for Thursday The high will only move slightly to the east into the western reaches of the Tasman Sea, and so should continue to produce showers and fresh to strong winds along the east coast of Queensland. More isolated showers again extending to nearby inland areas during the day. An upper trough should persist over the state, causing showers and storms to again spread out to patchy rain areas over the far north of the state. Showers increasing and tending to rain periods about the Central Coast and nearby inland areas. Remaining fine over the southern and central interior. Forecast for Friday The high should lie over the southern reaches of the Tasman Sea, whilst maintaining a firm ridge along the east coast of QLD. Moderate to fresh SE winds and scattered showers persisting over much of the east coast of QLD, with more isolated showers over the nearby inland areas. Scattered showers and isolated storms over the far north, and fine over the remainder of the state, except for the chance of some isolated showers about the Darling Downs. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday The high should drift slowly eastwards over the southern Tasman Sea while gradually weakening, allowing winds to and showers to ease along the east coast. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms continuing over the far north of the state, but the remainder of the state should be fine. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Tuesday.
