MELBOURNE - Apr 3/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood warnings are current for various rivers and streams. A gale warning is current for coastal waters between Cape Tribulation and Bowen. A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters between Cooktown and Burnett Heads. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A surface trough lies off the north tropical coast. A strong high [1036hPa] in the Great Australian Bight will move slowly east over the next few days, strengthening a ridge of high pressure along the east Queensland coast. A weak surface trough lies over the southern interior. Forecast for the rest of Monday Cloudy periods with some isolated showers and patchy light rain extending from the Gulf Country to the Central Coast. Scattered showers, isolated storms and rain areas should continue over the northern tropics. Showers increasing about the northeast tropical coast from the afternoon as the onshore flow increases, with the chance of some moderate to locally heavy falls developing during the evening about the coast and ranges north of about Lucinda. Showers along the coast and nearby inland areas south of about St. Lawrence. Fine conditions over the southern and central interior. Dry south to southeast winds about the southwest and southern interior. East to southeast winds elsewhere, fresh at times over the western districts and fresh to strong about much of the east coast. Strong to gale force winds about the coast and islands between Cooktown and Bowen from Monday afternoon. Forecast for Tuesday The strong high should be centred near Tasmania, with fresh to strong SE'ly winds continuing along much of the east coast of Queensland and gales persisting along the North Tropical Coast. Rain areas and thunderstorms should continue through the northern tropics, with moderate to heavy falls possible about the coast and ranges north of about Cardwell. Scattered showers along the coast south of about Mackay, with more isolated shower activity extending to nearby inland areas. Fine over the central and southern interior, and also over the northwest district. Forecast for Wednesday The high should lie near Tasmania, maintaining the fresh to strong SE'ly winds along much of the east coast of Queensland. This onshore flow should maintain scattered showers about the southern tropical, central and southeast coasts, and more isolated showers about the nearby inland areas. An upper level trough will maintain at least patchy rain areas, scattered showers and isolated storms over the northern tropics. Fine over the southern and central interior, and also over the northwest district. Forecast for Thursday The high will only move slightly to the east into the western reaches of the Tasman Sea, and so should continue to produce showers and fresh to strong winds along the east coast of Queensland. More isolated showers again extending to nearby inland areas during the day. An upper trough will persist over the state, causing showers and storms to again spread out to patchy rain areas over the far north of the state. Remaining fine over the southern and central interior. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday The high should move slowly east over the Tasman Sea, whilst maintaining the fresh to strong SE'ly winds along the east coast of Queensland. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms persisting through the northern tropics. Showers should continue along the remaining parts of the east coast in an onshore wind flow, with more isolated showers about the nearby inland areas. Conditions should remain fine over the southern interior. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Monday.
