Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Apr 2/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Flood warnings are current for various rivers and streams.
A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters between Cairns and Burnett
Heads.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A surface trough lies off the north tropical coast. A large high [1034hPa] in
the Great Australian Bight will strengthen a ridge of high pressure over the
east Queensland coast as it moves slowly east over the next few days. A weak
surface trough lies over the southern interior.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Scattered showers and possible thunder about the southeast coast during the
morning, before easing later in the day. Patchy rain areas should also ease to
isolated showers over the central interior of the state as the high directs
drier SE'ly winds into the area. Isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms
about the Wide Bay and Burnett and southern parts of the Central Highlands and
Coalfields. A deep, moist airmass will persist over the northern districts, with
rain areas and isolated thunderstorms continuing, and the chance of some locally
heavy falls on the coast and ranges north of about Bowen. Remaining cloudy over
the central coast with some patchy light rain areas. Fine conditions are
expected over the southern interior in the dry S'ly air. Light to moderate E to
SE winds, fresh at times over the western districts, and fresh to strong about
much of the east coast.
Forecast for Monday
The strong high will move east towards southeastern Australia, strengthening
the ridge further and maintaining a fresh to strong SE'ly wind flow along the
east coast of Queensland. Rain areas and thunderstorms will continue over the
northern tropics, with locally heavy falls possible about the northeastern coast
and ranges. Cloudy over the southern tropics and central coast with patchy light
rain and showers. Showers increasing about the southeast coast late in the day
as instability increases. Dry southerly winds should maintain fine conditions
over the southern and central interior.
Forecast for Tuesday
The strong high should move slowly east over Tasmania, with fresh to strong
SE'ly winds continuing along much of the east coast of Queensland. Rain areas
and thunderstorms will continue through the northern tropics. Patchy light rain
and showers should continue elsewhere north of about Mackay. Scattered showers
along the coast south of Mackay, and more isolated shower activity about the
adjacent inland areas. Fine over the central and southern interior.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high should lie near Tasmania, maintaining the fresh to strong SE'ly
winds along much of the east coast of Queensland. This onshore flow should
result in scattered showers about the southern tropical, central and southeast
coasts, and more isolated showers about the nearby inland areas. An upper level
trough will maintain at least patchy rain areas, scattered showers and isolated
storms over the northern tropics. Fine over the southern and central interior.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
The high should move slowly east over the Tasman Sea, whilst maintaining the
fresh to strong SE'ly winds along the east coast of Queensland. Scattered
showers and isolated thunderstorms persisting through the northern tropics.
Showers should continue along the remaining parts of the east coast in an
onshore wind flow, with more isolated showers about the nearby inland areas.
Conditions should remain fine over the southern interior.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Sunday.
