Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Apr 1/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Flood warnings are current for various rivers and streams.
A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters between Cardwell and St
Lawrence.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A surface trough lies over the northwestern Coral Sea. A large high [1033hPa]
in the Great Australian Bight will strengthen a ridge of high pressure over the
east Queensland coast as it moves slowly east over the next few days. A monsoon
trough extends from a developing low northwest of Darwin into far northern Gulf
of Carpentaria waters.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Rain areas, showers and isolated thunderstorms over northern districts and
the Central Coast with some moderate falls, locally heavy about the coast and
ranges. Mostly cloudy and cool conditions elsewhere north of about Longreach,
with patchy rain and isolated showers. Fine in the far southwest. Isolated
showers and thunderstorms elsewhere over the southern interior. Isolated showers
over the southeast, tending scattered inland in the afternoon with isolated
thunderstorms. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds, gusty at times along the central
and southern tropical coasts.
Forecast for Sunday
The high will move slowly east over the Great Australian Bight, strengthening
the ridge and directing fresh to strong SE'ly winds along the east Queensland
coast. Showers will ease over southeastern Queensland as an upper level trough
moves further offshore. Patchy rain areas will also ease to isolated showers
over the central interior of the state as the high directs drier SE'ly winds
into the area. A deep, moist airmass will persist over northern districts, with
rain areas and isolated thunderstorms continuing and possible locally heavy
falls on the coast and ranges north of about Bowen. Conditions will remain
mostly cloudy on the central coast though rainfall should become quite patchy.
Fine conditions are expected over the southern interior in the dry S'ly
airstream.
Forecast for Monday
The strong high will move east towards southeastern Australia, strengthening
the ridge further and maintaining a fresh to strong SE'ly wind flow along the
east Queensland coast. Rain areas and thunderstorms will continue over the
northern tropics, with locally heavy falls on the coast and ranges. Mostly
cloudy conditions will persist through the southern tropics and central coast
with patchy rain and showers. Shower activity along the southern coast will
increase late in the day as a surface trough approaches from the south. Mostly
fine conditions are expected through the central and southeastern interior with
just the chance of isolated showers. The dry S'ly wind flow will maintain fine
conditions over the southern interior.
Forecast for Tuesday
The strong high will move slowly east over Tasmania, with strong SE'ly winds
expected along much of the east Queensland coast. Rain areas and thunderstorms
will continue through the northern tropics, with locally heavy falls,
particularly on the coast and ranges. Patchy rain and showers will continue
elsewhere north of about Mackay. The surface trough will move north over the
southern Queensland coast, enhancing showers with possible local thunder. More
isolated shower activity is expected through the southeastern and central
interior, with fine conditions continuing over the southern interior.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The large high will move slowly east over the Tasman Sea, with fresh to
strong SE'ly winds continuing along the east Queensland coast. The monsoon
trough will possibly become more organised through the Gulf of Carpentaria and
extend into the northern Coral Sea. Rain areas and thunderstorms will therefore
most likely persist through the northern tropics. Showers will continue along
remaining parts of the east coast in an onshore wind flow, with isolated showers
through the eastern interior. Conditions should remain fine over the southern
interior.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Saturday.
