Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Mar 30/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A weak surface trough lies over the northwestern Coral Sea and extends to the
southern tropical Queensland coast. A high in the Bight extends a ridge along
the Queensland east coast. A monsoon trough extends from a developing low over
the Northern Territory coast into far northern Gulf of Carpentaria waters. An
upper level trough is moving east over southeastern Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Scattered showers and possible local thunder over the Capricorn and southern
coasts, easing to isolated showers south of Fraser Island. Isolated showers over
the southern interior north and east of Charleville. Cloudy with rain areas,
scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over northern districts and the
Central Coast, with locally heavy falls, particularly along the coast between
Bowen and Sarina. Areas of cloud and patchy rain elsewhere over central parts of
the state. Moderate to fresh mostly E to SE winds.
Forecast for Friday
A high will enter the Tasman Sea, extending a ridge along the east coast of
Queensland. A surface trough will move into southwestern Queensland and generate
afternoon and evening showers to its east over the southern interior. A new
upper level trough will approach southeastern Queensland, gradually enhancing
showers along the southeast Queensland coast. A deep, moist airstream will
maintain scattered showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over the
tropics and along the central coast with moderate to locally heavy falls likely,
particularly along the tropical coast between about Cairns and Mackay.
Conditions will remain cloudy over remaining central parts of the state with
patchy rain areas and possible isolated thunderstorms.
Forecast for Saturday
The high over the Tasman Sea will weaken and drift towards New Zealand as a
new high enters the Great Australian Bight. The upper level trough will maintain
unstable conditions over southeastern parts of the state, with enhanced shower
activity and possible local thunder. The inland surface trough will persist over
the southern interior, generating isolated showers and possible thunderstorms to
its east. Fine conditions will persist in a drier southeasterly wind flow over
southwestern Queensland. A deep, moist airstream will continue through the
northern districts and along the central coast, producing rain areas and
isolated thunderstorms with moderate to locally heavy rainfalls. Patchy rain
will continue elsewhere over central Queensland, with possible isolated
thunderstorms.
Forecast for Sunday
The high will move east over the Great Australian Bight, extending a firm
ridge along the east Queensland coast. The upper level trough will most likely
contract off the southeast Queensland coast, with showers easing along the
southeast coast. Patchy rain areas will also ease to very isolated showers over
the central interior of the state as the high directs drier SE'ly winds into the
area. A deep, moist airmass will persist over northern districts and the central
coast however, with rain areas and isolated thunderstorms continuing and
moderate to locally heavy falls likely. Fine conditions are expected in the
southwest in the dry S'ly airstream.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The large high in the Great Australian Bight will most likely move slowly
east, reaching the Tasman Sea on Wednesday. Drier air should extend north
through the state, gradually contracting rain areas and locally heavy falls into
the northern tropics. Isolated to scattered showers will containing about the
central and southern coasts in an onshore wind flow. Conditions should be fine
over the interior of the state thanks to the stabilising influence of the ridge
of high pressure.
