Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Mar 28/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Severe Weather Warning has been issued for heavy rainfall
for Cairns to Bowen.
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Cardwell and Burnett
Heads.
Flood warnings are current for various rivers and streams.

Weather Situation
A high, 1030 hPa, lies over southeastern Australia and extends a ridge along
the east coast of QLD. A weak surface trough lies over the Queensland interior.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Cloudy with scattered showers, patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms over
the northern tropics. Moderate to locally heavy falls about the north tropical
and central coast north of about Mackay. Scattered showers along the southeast
and remainder of the central coast, with more isolated showers over nearby
inland areas. Isolated showers and storms over the northwest and central
interior. Fine over the southeast interior. Fresh to strong S to SE winds along
the coast south of about Cardwell. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Tuesday
Cloudy with scattered showers, patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms over
the northern tropics. Moderate to locally heavy falls about the north tropical
and central coast north of about Mackay. Scattered showers along the southeast
and remainder of the central coast, with more isolated showers over nearby
inland areas. Isolated showers and storms over the far west. Fine elsewhere.
Fresh to strong S to SE winds along the coast south of about Cardwell. Light to
moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high will shift to the east of New Zealand, weakening the ridge and
leaving generally moderate to fresh E to SE winds over the east coast of QLD.
This onshore flow will continue to push some showers onto the southeast and
central coasts, spreading into the central and southeast interior in the
afternoon. The monsoonal airflow over northern Australia is likely to produce
further areas of thundery rain over the Gulf of Carpentaria, and at least
moderate falls over the Gulf Country. Scattered showers, patchy rain and
isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of the northern tropics, with moderate
to possibly locally heavy falls continuing about the north tropical coast and
ranges. Fine over the southern interior.
Forecast for Thursday
A new high pressure system will enter the Great Australian Bight, directing
dry southeasterly winds into the southern interior, and pushing isolated showers
onto the southeast and Capricornia coasts. The monsoon may begin to retreat to
the west, however winds around it may still produce further areas of thundery
rain over the Gulf of Carpentaria, and at least moderate falls over the Gulf
Country. Scattered showers, patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms continuing
over the remainder of the northern tropics.
Forecast for Friday
The previous high in the Bight will weaken as the next stronger high begins
to dominate. Dry southeasterly winds will continue through the southern
interior, and will direct isolated showers onto the southeast and Capricornia
coasts. Scattered showers, patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms continuing
over the remainder of the northern tropics.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
A ridge is likely to continue pushing showers into the east coast of
Queensland, though the rain should ease over the north tropical coast as the
upper level weather patterns become less favourable for heavy rain. Scattered
showers, patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms persisting elsewhere over the
northern tropics, though gradually contracting northwards as the upper trough
moves offshore. Mainly fine over the southern districts.
