MELBOURNE - Mar 26/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between
Cardwell and Point Danger.
Flood warnings are current for various rivers and streams.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A strong high, 1032 hPa, over the Great Australian Bight is extending a ridge
along the southern Queensland coast. An upper level trough is producing rain
areas about the northern parts of the state.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Cloudy with scattered showers, patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms over
the northeast tropics. Moderate to possibly locally heavy falls developing about
the northeast and central coasts. Isolated late showers and thunderstorms
developing about the western Gulf Country. Scattered showers along the remaining
coast, with isolated showers developing over the nearby inland areas in the
afternoon and evening. Light to moderate S to SE winds, tending fresh to strong
along the southern to central coast.
Forecast for Monday
The high pressure system should move east into the Tasman Sea and will
continue to direct fresh onshore winds onto the east coast of Queensland. The
onshore flow will maintain the cloud and showers about the southeast and central
coast districts. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the tropics, tending
to areas of patchy rain with moderate to possibly locally heavy falls about the
northeast coast and ranges. Fine over the southwest and southern interior. Light
to moderate S to SE winds, tending fresh to strong along most of the east
coast.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high should drift over the eastern Tasman Sea and will continue to push
some showers onto the southeast and central coasts, spreading into the central
and southeast interior in the afternoon. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds along
the east coast, strong at times in the tropics. An increasing monsoonal airflow
over northern Australia may increase areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms
over the Gulf of Carpentaria with at least moderate falls near the Gulf coast.
Scattered showers, patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of
the tropics with moderate to possibly locally heavy falls about the north
tropical coast and ranges. Cloud and patchy light rain extending south into the
central interior. Remaining fine over the southwest and southern interior.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high should shift to the east of New Zealand with the ridge along the
coast weakening with generally moderate to fresh E to SE winds onto the east
coast. The onshore airflow will continue to push some showers onto the southeast
and central coasts, spreading into the central and southern interior in the
afternoon. The monsoonal airflow over northern Australia is likely to produce
further areas of thundery rain over the Gulf of Carpentaria, and at least
moderate falls over the Gulf Country. Scattered showers, patchy rain and
isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of the tropics with moderate to
possibly locally heavy falls continuing about the north tropical coast and
ranges. Cloud and patchy light rain persisting over the central interior as a
new upper trough moves over southwest Queensland. Remaining fine over the
southwest.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
The monsoon trough is likely to persist over northern Australia but should
weaken late in the week. A ridge is likely to continue pushing showers into the
east coast of QLD, though the rain should ease over the north tropical coast as
the high ridge and the onshore flow weakens. Scattered showers, patchy rain and
isolated thunderstorms persisting over the northern tropics, with patchy light
rain continuing over the central interior as the upper trough moves over
southern Queensland. Remaining fine over the southwest.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Sunday.
