Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Mar 24/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A high over the Great Australian Bight is extending a ridge and dry SW winds
over the southern and central parts of Queensland. A weak surface trough extends
from the Gulf Country to the Capricornia coast.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms about the northern tropics and central
coast areas, tending to rain at times during the afternoon and evening. Fine
elsewhere. Light to moderate SW to SE winds over most of the state, tending
NE'ly over far northern Queensland.
Forecast for Saturday
The high should remain near the eastern reaches of the Great Australian
Bight, and will continue to push dry air into the southern and central interior
of QLD. The high will also push a fresh to strong S to SE wind change up the
southeast coast of QLD during the day, causing cloud to increase and isolated,
mainly light showers to develop about the southeast coast and ranges. An upper
level trough will combine with onshore flow to produce scattered showers and
areas of rain about the northeast coast, with moderate to locally heavy falls
possible. Scattered showers and thunderstorms also over the remainder of the
northern tropics, and also about the central coast district.
Forecast for Sunday
The high is expected to drift eastwards and should be centred near Victoria
by the evening. The high should continue to extend fresh to strong S to SE winds
along the central and southern coast of QLD. These winds should produce cloudy
conditions with some mainly light showers about the coast and southern ranges.
An upper level trough should remain over the state, and it, along with a
continued onshore flow, may produce further moderate to heavy falls about the
northeast coastal districts. Scattered showers and storms elsewhere over the
northern tropics and central coast district.
Forecast for Monday
The high pressure system should be centred over the Tasman sea by Monday, and
will continue to direct fresh onshore winds onto the east coast of QLD. The
onshore flow will maintain the cloudy periods and showers about the southeast
and central coast districts and adjacent inland, and areas of morning drizzle
about the ranges in the southeast of the state. Scattered showers and storms
over the tropics, tending to rain periods about the northeast coast and the
central interior.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The monsoon trough should return to the southern reaches of the Gulf of
Carpentaria by the middle of the week, producing areas of rain and gusty showers
over the Gulf Country. Meanwhile a combination of persistent onshore flow and a
weak upper trough should produce further rain areas about the northeast coast
early in the new week, before easing during Wednesday as the high weakens in the
Tasman Sea. Showers about the southern coast and adjacent inland will continue.
Isolated showers and storms over the central interior, with more widespread
activity over the tropical north. Remaining fine in the southern interior.
