Weather Situation
A weak ridge extends over the northern Coral Sea. A surface trough is
expected to lie over the northern and far eastern interior through today.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Scattered showers, isolated thunderstorms and areas of rain with moderate to
locally heavy falls over the northern tropics. Scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms over far eastern districts, less likely over the southeast. Fine
elsewhere. Light to moderate SW winds over the interior, tending NW to NE near
the east coast.
Forecast for Wednesday
The surface trough will remain slow moving over far eastern and northern
parts of the state, with isolated showers and possible thunderstorms over
central coastal districts and thundery rain area with moderate to locally heavy
falls over the northeast tropics. Fine elsewhere. Temperatures will remain above
the March average in the far east and below average elsewhere.
Forecast for Thursday
A new trough will move east over southern Queensland, pushing off the
southeast Queensland coast by the afternoon. Drier, SW'ly winds will extend over
the southeast with fine conditions expected. Unstable conditions will persist
over the coast north of about Rockhampton and through the tropics, aided by an
upper trough entering southwestern Queensland. Isolated showers and possible
thunderstorms are expected, increasing to thundery rain areas over the
northeastern tropics with possible locally heavy falls with thunderstorms.
Temperatures will remain above the March average in the far east and well below
elsewhere.
Forecast for Friday
The upper level trough is expected to intensify further and move east over
the state. The surface trough will persist over the northern tropics with
unstable conditions and scattered showers, thunderstorms and patchy areas of
rain. Isolated showers and thunderstorms near the central coast. Isolated
showers developing about the coast south of about Bundaberg as a new trough and
S to SE wind change moves along the southern Queensland coast.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
A second upper level trough is expected to enter southern Queensland on
Saturday. This will increase instability through eastern and northern
Queensland. Widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue over the
northern tropics, with the locally heavy falls possibly extending south into the
southern tropics late Sunday and Monday. A high will move east over the Great
Australian Bight, extending an onshore wind flow onto the central and southeast
coasts from Saturday, making showers more likely with possible thunder due to
instability associated with the upper level trough. Fine over the rest of the
state.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Tuesday.
