MELBOURNE - Mar 21/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood Warnings are current for the Fitzroy River Catchment, Moonie, Warrego, Bulloo, Georgina, Condamine and Balonne Rivers, Western Queensland Rivers including the Diamantina, Paroo and Barcoo Rivers, and Eyre, Cooper, and Myall Creeks. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A weak ridge of high pressure extends over the northern Coral Sea. A trough currently lies on the Fraser coast and is expected to move north into the southern Capricornia today. A second trough lies over southwestern Queensland and is expected to move east over the interior of the state today, contracting into far northern and eastern parts of the state on Tuesday. Forecast for the rest of Monday Rain areas and thunderstorms with moderate to possibly locally heavy falls over the central coast and through the southern tropics. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the northern tropics, becoming scattered with rain areas developing from the south in the afternoon and evening. Isolated showers and morning drizzle areas over the Southeast Coast district, with possible isolated late thunderstorms, chiefly inland. Showers and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere, clearing the southwestern corner of the state in the afternoon. Moderate SW'ly winds extending over western districts. Light to moderate SW to NW winds, tending light and variable in the far north. Forecast for Tuesday The inland trough will continue moving east into the eastern interior. Fine and cool conditions will extend through western districts, though some cloud will linger in the southwest. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected over eastern and northern districts to the east of the trough with, more widespread thunderstorm activity and rain areas with possible locally heavy falls over the tropics. Temperatures will be below the March average in the west and above it in the far east. Forecast for Wednesday The trough will remain slow moving over far eastern and northern parts of the state, with isolated showers and possible thunderstorms over central and southeast coastal districts and thundery rain area over the northeast tropics. Fine and cool conditions elsewhere. Temperatures will remain above the March average in the far east and below elsewhere. Forecast for Thursday A new trough will move east over southern Queensland, pushing off the southeast Queensland coast by the afternoon. Drier, SW'ly winds will then extend over the southeast with fine conditions expected. Unstable conditions will persist over the coast north of Fraser Island and through the tropics, aided by an upper trough entering southwestern Queensland. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms are expected, increasing to thundery rain areas over the northeastern tropics with possible locally heavy falls with thunderstorms. Temperatures will remain above the March average in the far east and well below elsewhere. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday The upper level trough is expected to intensify further and move east over the state, followed by a second upper level trough entering southern Queensland on Saturday. This will increase instability through eastern and northern Queensland. Widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue over the northern tropics, with the locally heavy falls possibly extending south into the southern tropics on Sunday. A high will move east over the Great Australian Bight, extending an onshore wind flow onto the central and southeast coasts from Saturday, making showers more likely with possible thunder due to instability associated with the upper level trough. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Monday.
