Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Mar 20/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Flood Warnings are current for the Fitzroy River Catchment,
Moonie, Warrego, Bulloo, Georgina, Condamine, Balonne, Western Queensland and
Gulf Rivers, Myall and Eyre Creeks.

Weather Situation
A high in the southern Tasman Sea extends a weak ridge over the Coral Sea. A
trough lies over southern Queensland and extends to a weak low offshore of the
Sunshine Coast. The trough will move slowly north throughout the next day or
two, while a second trough is approaching southwestern parts of the state and
will move east over the Queensland interior through the early part of this
week.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Cloudy with rain areas and thunderstorms through the south, central and
western areas of the state, though only isolated showers in the far southwest.
Some moderate to possibly locally heavy falls about the central regions.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the tropics, tending to rain at night
about the southern tropics. Light to moderate mostly SW to NW winds, tending
moderate to fresh SE to NE over the far southeast.
Forecast for Monday
Rain areas and thunderstorms with some moderate to locally heavy falls in the
central and southern tropics. Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the far
north. Isolated showers and thunderstorms in the south, contracting to eastern
parts late in the day. Patchy rain and drizzle areas about the southeast. Light
to moderate SW to W winds, tending light and variable in the far north.
Forecast for Tuesday
The surface trough will continue moving east into the eastern interior. Fine
and cool conditions will extend further through western districts, though some
cloud will linger in the southwest. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are
expected over central and southeastern districts to the east of the trough. More
widespread thunderstorm activity and rain areas with possibly locally heavy
falls are expected over the tropics. Temperatures will be below the March
average in the west and above it in the far east.
Forecast for Wednesday
The trough will remain slow moving over far eastern and northern parts of the
state, with isolated showers and possible thunderstorms over central and
southeast coastal districts and thundery rain area over the northeast tropics.
Fine and cool conditions elsewhere. Temperatures remaining above the March
average in the far east and well below elsewhere.
Forecast for Thursday
The trough will remain slow moving over far eastern and northern parts of the
state, with isolated showers and possible thunderstorms over central and
southeast coastal districts and thundery rain area over the northeast tropics.
Fine and cool conditions elsewhere. Temperatures remaining above the March
average in the far east and well below elsewhere.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
An upper level trough is expected to intensify in the west of the state,
increasing instability in the east. Showers and thunderstorms will continue
about the tropics and eastern districts. Showers returning to the southeast over
the weekend. Generally fine conditions expected inland.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Monday.
