MELBOURNE - Mar 20/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood Warnings are current for the Bulloo, Warrego, Connors, Isaac, Mackenzie, and Gulf Rivers, Condamine River and Myall and Bungil Creeks, and Western Queensland Rivers, including the Diamantina, Georgina and Barcoo Rivers. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high in the southern Tasman Sea extends a weak ridge over the Coral Sea. A trough lies over southern Queensland and extends to a weak low offshore of the Sunshine Coast. The trough is expected to move slowly north towards the Capricorn coast today. A second trough is approaching southwestern parts of the state and is expected to move east over the Queensland interior over the next couple of days. Forecast for the rest of Sunday Cloudy with rain areas and thunderstorms over central districts, the Wide Bay, far northern Darling Downs and western districts north of about Roma. Possible locally heavy falls, particularly with thunderstorms. Patchy rain areas and isolated showers over remaining southeastern parts. Showers and isolated thunderstorms developing in the far southwest. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the tropics, more widespread with patchy rain areas over the southern tropics. Light to moderate mostly SW to NW winds, tending moderate to fresh SE to NE over the far southeast. Forecast for Monday The second trough is expected to move east over the interior, generating moist and unstable conditions to its north and east. Rain areas and thunderstorms are expected over the tropics south of Cooktown and through central districts with possible locally heavy falls, particularly with thunderstorms. More isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected over the far northern tropics and through the southern interior. The dry, cool SW'ly wind change behind the trough will gradually clear shower and thunderstorm activity from western districts south and west of about Longreach. Forecast for Tuesday The trough is expected to continue moving east into the eastern interior. Fine and cool conditions will extend further through western districts, though some cloud will linger in the southwest. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected over central and southeastern districts to the east of the trough. More widespread thunderstorm activity and rain areas with possibly locally heavy falls are expected over the tropics. Temperatures will be below the March average in the west and above it in the far east. Forecast for Wednesday The trough will most likely remain slow moving over far eastern and northern parts of the state, with isolated showers and possible thunderstorms over central and southeast coastal districts and thundery rain area over the northeast tropics. Fine and cool conditions elsewhere. Temperatures remaining above the March average in the far east and well below elsewhere. Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday An upper level trough will most likely intensify over western parts of the state, increasing instability in the east. Showers and thunderstorms are therefore expected to continue over the tropics and through central districts and the Wide Bay. Showers will most likely develop about the southeast coast again from Saturday as a large high moving over the Great Australian Bight extends fresh SE'ly winds onto the coast. Fine conditions should persist over western Queensland in a persistent cool, dry S'ly wind flow. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Sunday.
