Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Mar 19/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Flood Warnings are current for the Bulloo, Connors, Isaac,
Mackenzie, Gulf and Western Queensland Rivers, including the Diamantina,
Georgina and Barcoo Rivers.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A weak high in the Tasman Sea extends a weak ridge along the east coast of
Queensland. A surface trough lies over the southern interior and is expected to
extend into the state's southeast during Saturday.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Cloudy with thundery rain areas over the southern interior and the central
parts of the state, mainly producing moderate falls, but with a low to moderate
chance of some locally heavy activity. Mainly lighter rain periods and cloudy
over the southeast districts, and just the chance of some isolated
thunderstorms. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the far north of the
state, more widespread over the southern tropics. Light to moderate NE to NW
winds over most of the state, and a moderate SE wind change about the southeast
coast during the day.
Forecast for Sunday
The high in the Tasman Sea should strengthen a little and push the surface
trough northwards, leaving it to extend from the Capricornia coast to the
Channel Country. This should allow the rain areas to break up to isolated
showers over the southeast districts. However thundery rain with at least
moderate falls is expected near the trough [over the central and southern
interior], with the chance of some locally heavy falls also in those districts.
Drier, moderate SW winds should enter the Channel Country behind a new surface
trough, causing showers ease and contract to the east in that region. Mainly
isolated showers and thunderstorms in the northern tropics. Light to moderate
NW to NE winds over much of the state.
Forecast for Monday
The dry change behind the western surface trough should move further to the
east during the day. There is some uncertainty about its expected location at
this early stage, however the most likely scenario is for it to extend from the
northwest of the state down to the southern interior by Monday afternoon. The
drier air should allow showers to clear behind the trough, while scattered
showers and thunderstorms are still expected near and to the east of it, in
districts such as the northwest and the northern Goldfields, the central
interior, central coast, and possibly the southern interior. Isolated showers
and thunderstorms over the far northern tropics and the southeast districts.
Forecast for Tuesday
Dry air should extend further over QLD as the trough moves east, leaving the
majority of the state fine except for some scattered showers and thunderstorms
over the far northern and northeast coastal districts, and possibly the central
coast. Fine over the southeast except for just the chance of some isolated,
mainly light showers about the ranges.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
A ridge over South Australia should continue to extend dry air northwards
over QLD, with almost the entire state expected to see fine conditions except
for some scattered showers and thunderstorms over the far northern tropics.
Conditions should then remain fine or mostly fine over much of the state except
the far northern regions.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Saturday.
