MELBOURNE - Mar 18/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood Warnings are current for the Bulloo, Herbert, Conners, Isaac, Gulf and Western Queensland Rivers, including the Diamantina and Georgina Rivers. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A weak high in the Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the east Queensland coast. A surface trough lies over the southern interior of Queensland and is expected to remain slow moving and intensify on Friday. Forecast for the rest of Friday Rain areas and thunderstorms over the southern interior with moderate to possibly heavy falls over the eastern Channel Country, southern parts of the Central West, the Darling Downs and the Maranoa and Warrego forecast districts. Cloudy over the Southeast Coast and southern central districts with patchy rain areas, isolated showers and afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Showers and isolated thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula, northwestern Queensland and the northeast tropical coast. Mostly fine elsewhere with only isolated showers and possible afternoon or evening thunderstorms. Light to moderate NW to NE winds over the southern half of the state, tending SE to NE in the north. Forecast for Saturday The trough over the southern interior will move east into southeastern districts while a second trough approaches the far southwestern corner of the state. Rain areas and thunderstorms should therefore extend over southeastern districts and also gradually north into central districts with moderate to locally heavy falls likely, particularly near the trough in the southeast. Conditions will remain unstable in the southwest with showers and thunderstorms. A moist unstable airmass will result in showers and isolated thunderstorms over northern parts of the state. Forecast for Sunday The trough over southeastern Queensland will have most likely extended offshore. A high is expected to intensify over the Tasman Sea, extending a ridge towards southeastern Queensland and shifting the trough further north. Rain areas should therefore gradually contract north into central parts of the state and into the southern tropics. Remaining cloudy over the far southeast with isolated showers in the wake of the rain band. A new trough will possibly move east into southwestern Queensland, producing showers and thunderstorms. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms continuing over the northern tropics in a moist, unstable airmass. Forecast for Monday Some uncertainty exists with the movement of the new trough but at this stage the most likely scenario is for it to move east over the southern interior. Thundery rain areas should continue to extend north from central districts into the tropics south of about Cairns with possible locally heavy falls. The trough over the southern interior is expected to produced showers and thunderstorms near and to its east, reaching the southeastern inland parts. Isolated showers should occur over the southeast coast and also over the far southwest. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected over the far northern tropics. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday The trough will most likely move east into southeastern districts on Tuesday and contract off the southeast Queensland coast by Wednesday. Showers and thunderstorms will accompany the trough, over southeastern Queensland, easing to isolated showers from Wednesday. A new high will move into the Tasman Sea on Wednesday, extending a ridge over southern and central parts of the state. Rain areas and thunderstorms should therefore contract out of central districts and the southern tropics after Wednesday but continue through the northern tropics. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Friday.
