Weather Situation
The monsoon trough lies over the western Gulf Country from a low over the
Northern Territory. A high near New Zealand extends a ridge along most of the
east Queensland coast. A surface trough lies over the western Coral Sea.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Scattered showers, patchy rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over the
tropics with moderate falls. Locally heavy falls about the Central and
Capricornia coasts and adjacent inland. Heavy rain easing over the northwest.
Scattered showers and some rain over the Wide Bay and Burnett. Isolated showers
over the Southeast Coast. Fine over the far southern interior. Another cool day
under cloud in the tropics and central districts. Mostly moderate SE to NE
winds, fresh at times along the central and southern coast.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high over the southern Tasman Sea will move to the east of New Zealand,
with the ridge along the east Queensland coast weakening. Isolated showers about
the southeast in the onshore flow. Areas of rain, showers and isolated
thunderstorms about the tropical and central coast spreading across the tropical
interior as the surface trough moves west. Moderate falls, locally heavy at
first about the Central and Capricornia coasts and adjacent inland. Scattered
showers and isolated thunderstorms over western districts, though fine over the
far southern interior. Isolated showers over the Southeast Coast. Another cool
day under cloud in the tropics and central districts.
Forecast for Wednesday
The ridge persists along the east Queensland coast with scattered showers,
more isolated in the southeast. A surface trough moves over northern New South
Wales and into far southern Queensland late in the day. Remaining cool and
cloudy with patchy rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over most of the
interior as the surface trough over the tropical interior moves to west of the
Queensland border.
Forecast for Thursday
The ridge persists along the east Queensland coast with generally scattered
showers, more isolated in the southeast. The surface trough remains slow moving
near the southern Queensland border and combined with a weak upper trough over
New South Wales produces isolated afternoon and evening showers and
thunderstorms over the southeast interior. Cloudy with patchy rain areas and
isolated thunderstorms over the southwest of the state, with scattered showers
and thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and the tropical interior due to high
humidity and unstable conditions.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
A high moves very slowly east over the Southern Ocean and into the southern
Tasman Sea during the weekend with a stronger ridge developing along the
southern Queensland coast. Ahead of this, the surface trough over far southern
Queensland is expected to move slowly northwards bringing showers and
thunderstorms to most of southern Queensland on Friday. The broad upper trough
system over New South Wales is expected to extend areas of cloud and patchy
thundery rain from southwest Queensland across southern and central Queensland
during the weekend. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to persist
over most of the tropics.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Monday.
