MELBOURNE - Mar 12/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Severe Weather Warning is current for flash flooding and worsening an existing major flood situation for the Gulf Country and Northwest Forecast districts. A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Bowen and Gladstone. Flood Warnings are current for various rivers across the state. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation An active monsoon trough extends from the Gulf Country district to over Cape York Peninsula. A high near New Zealand extends a ridge along the east coast south of the monsoon trough. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Rain areas and thunderstorms over the Gulf Country and northwest with heavy falls. Scattered showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of the tropics and central districts. Moderate falls, locally heavy about the coast and adjacent inland between about Cardwell and Gladstone. Scattered showers and patchy rain over the Wide Bay and Burnett. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over southern Queensland, with more isolated showers over the Channel Country. Moderate NW to NE winds over the north and west. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Sunday Rain areas and thunderstorms over the Gulf Country and northwest with heavy falls. Scattered showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of the tropics and central districts. Moderate falls, locally heavy about the coast and adjacent inland between about Cardwell and Gladstone. Scattered showers and patchy rain over the Wide Bay and Burnett. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over southern Queensland, though fine over the Warrego. Another cool day over the north of the state under cloud. Moderate NW to NE winds over the northwest. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Monday A high over the Great Australian Bight will move east into the Tasman Sea and maintain an onshore flow onto the southern Queensland coast with scattered showers. A surface trough over the Coral Sea is expected to move west onto the tropical coast and adjacent inland between Cooktown and Gladstone with areas of rain, isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls. Rain areas and isolated thunderstorms spreading into the central interior during the day. The monsoon trough remains over the northwest with rain areas and heavy falls over the Gulf Country. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of the tropics. A cool day over the north of the state under cloud. Fine conditions over the far southern interior, with isolated showers over the southeast interior. Forecast for Tuesday The high over the Tasman Sea will move slowly eastwards, with the ridge along the east coast weakening. Isolated showers about the southeast in the onshore flow. Areas of rain, showers and isolated thunderstorms over the tropics as the surface trough moves west over the tropical interior. Moderate to heavy falls, particularly about the coast and adjacent inland between about Cooktown and Gladstone. Fine over the southwest and southern interior. Forecast for Wednesday The weak high shifts to the southeast of New Zealand as the monsoon trough over the northern tropics weakens. The surface trough over the tropical interior moves to west of the Queensland border and spreads areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms over northern and most of western Queensland but with rainfall amounts decreasing. Showers and patchy rain areas over the remainder of the tropics. Isolated showers about the southern to Capricornia coast, developing over the southeast interior ahead of a surface trough moving over New South Wales. Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday A new high moves over the Southern Ocean and into the southern Tasman Sea by the weekend. A new ridge will develop along the east coast, maintaining showers in the onshore flow over eastern districts. The weak monsoon trough will contract to far northern Gulf of Carpentaria, with scattered showers and thunderstorms expected to persist over most of the tropics and far western Queensland. Mostly fine conditions are expected for the southern interior, with isolated showers and possible thunderstorms over the southeast on Thursday and Friday due to a surface and upper level trough in the area. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Sunday.
