Weather Situation
An active monsoon trough extends from the Gulf Country district to over Cape
York Peninsula. A high near New Zealand extends a ridge along the east coast
south of the monsoon trough.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Rain areas and thunderstorms over the Gulf Country and northwest with heavy
falls. Scattered showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over the
remainder of the tropics and central districts, with moderate to locally heavy
falls about the coast and adjacent inland between about Innisfail and Gladstone.
Scattered showers and patchy rain over the Wide Bay and Burnett. Scattered
showers and isolated thunderstorms over southern Queensland, with more isolated
showers over the Channel Country. Moderate NW to NE winds over the north and
west. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Sunday
The high will move to the southeast of New Zealand while a new high moves
east over the Great Australian Bight. The monsoon trough will remain over the
Gulf Country while a new trough will develop in the northern Coral Sea and move
west towards the Queensland east coast. Rain areas and thunderstorms will
continue over the tropics, northwest and Central to Capricorn coasts with local
heavy falls in the Gulf Country, and about the east coast between Cairns and
Rockhampton. Isolated showers and thunderstorms in the southern tropics, eastern
interior and far west, easing to fine conditions in the southern interior.
Scattered showers about the southeast coast.
Forecast for Monday
The high in the Great Australian Bight will move east into the Tasman Sea
while the Coral Sea trough begins to move west over the central and tropical
east coast. The monsoon trough remains over the northwest. Rain areas and
thunderstorms will persist over the north and northwest, and the east coast
north of Fraser Island with heavy falls possible in the Gulf Country and on the
east coast between Cairns and Gladstone. Scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms are expected over the remaining southern tropics and eastern
interior while isolated showers should continue in an onshore wind flow over the
southeast and through the central interior. Fine conditions are expected in the
south and southwest.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high in the Tasman Sea will move slowly eastwards, weakening the ridge
along the east coast slightly. The monsoon trough will weaken over northwest
Queensland while the Coral Sea trough moves west into central parts. Rain areas
about much of northern and central Queensland with heavy falls possible on the
east coast between Cooktown and Gladstone, and moderate falls inland east of
about Longreach. Isolated to scattered showers in the southeast and fine in the
far south.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
A ridge persists along the east coast while the trough moves into the
northern territory on Wednesday with rain areas and thunderstorms to persist
about much of northern and central Queensland with heavy falls possible about
the Central, Tropical and North Tropical coasts. Isolated showers for the
southeast. Later in the week expect rain areas to ease with scattered showers
and isolated thunderstorms generally over northern and western Queensland, and
isolated showers along the remaining east coast. Fine conditions are expected
for the southern interior.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Saturday.
