Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Mar 11/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Severe Weather Warning is current for flash flooding for
the Gulf of Carpentaria coast south of Weipa and remaining parts of the Gulf
Country district southwest of Normanton.
Flood Warnings are current for various rivers across the state.

Weather Situation
An active monsoon trough extends from the Gulf Country district to the
Northeast Tropical Coast district. A weak low lies on the monsoon trough over
the northwest Coral Sea. Another trough far southwest Queensland. A high in the
Tasman Sea extends a strengthening ridge along the east coast.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Rain areas and thunderstorms over the northern tropics and northwest with
some heavy falls, particularly over the Gulf Country and Peninsula districts.
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over far western parts of the
state. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms over remaining parts of the
interior, showers becoming scattered into the east. Light to moderate NW winds
over the northwest. Moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Saturday
Rain areas and thunderstorms over the northern tropics and northwest with
some heavy falls. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the interior, though
less likely in the southwest. Scattered showers and possible thunderstorms in
the east. Light to moderate NW winds over the northwest. Moderate SE to NE winds
elsewhere.
Forecast for Sunday
The high will move to the southeast of New Zealand while a new high moves
east over the Great Australian Bight. The monsoon trough will remain over the
Gulf Country and North Tropical Coast while the low near the North Tropical
Coast is forecast to weaken. Rain areas and thunderstorms will continue over the
tropics, northwest, with showers possibly becoming rain about the Central areas.
Some heavy falls expected, most likely on the Gulf coast and through the
northeast tropics. Isolated showers are expected over the southeast coast,
tending very isolated about the southeast interior. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms are expected for remaining central and western parts.
Forecast for Monday
The high in the Great Australian Bight will move east into the Tasman Sea.
The east coast tropical low, and the monsoon trough, are forecast to move south
and approach the Tropical Coast. Rain areas and thunderstorms will persist over
Cape York Peninsula, the eastern tropics and extending south towards the
Capricornia district with locally heavy falls likely. Scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms are expected over the remaining southern tropics and
eastern interior while isolated showers should continue in an onshore wind flow
over the southeast. Fine conditions are expected in the south and west.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high in the Tasman Sea will move slowly eastwards, weakening the ridge
along the east coast slightly. The monsoon trough will remain active in the
Coral Sea, with rain areas about the northern tropics and central coast with
moderate to heavy falls. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms extending
to the southern tropics and northwest. Isolated showers about the southern coast
region.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The high will move slowly east over the Tasman Sea, weakening the ridge along
the east Queensland coast. The
trough will move slowly inland, though showers and thunderstorms still expected
about the northern tropics. Mostly fine in the south with isolated showers about
the southern coast, and very isolated showers or thunderstorms extending towards
the southwest.
