Weather Situation
An active near stationary monsoon trough extends from the Gulf Country
district to the Northeast Tropical Coast district. Another trough extends from a
low over the Northern Territory extends into southeastern Australia. A high over
the Tasman Sea extends a weakening ridge along central and southern Queensland
coasts.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Rain areas and thunderstorms over most of the tropics and northwest with some
heavy falls. Possible localised flash flooding along the Gulf of Carpentaria
coast south of Weipa and the northeast tropical coast between about Cairns and
Lucinda [refer to severe weather warnings]. Early patchy rain and isolated
thunderstorms in the SW of the state redeveloping later today. Fine over the
central and southern interior. Showers about the east coast, decreasing inland.
Light to moderate NW winds over the far northern tropics. Light to moderate SE
to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Friday
Little change over the tropics although the rainfall increases about the Gulf
coast as an upper low develops. Continuing concentrated rainfall on the NE
tropical coast due to the monsoonal trough. Showers about the east coast,
increasing about the central coast. Showers decreasing inland and tending
towards very isolated showers and thunderstorms over the central interior. The
surface trough remains stationary in the far west but maintains the thunderstorm
activity with early patchy rain.
Forecast for Saturday
Continuing rain areas and thunderstorms generally over the tropics, more
concentrated about the Gulf coast and western Cape York Peninsular with some
heavy falls. Rain areas and isolated thunderstorms on the NE tropical coast with
local heavy falls as the monsoon trough shifts a little north. Very isolated
showers and thunderstorms over the interior tending towards showers about the
east coast. Rain areas or occasional showers about the central coast with
possible thunder. Some showers continuing over the SE of the state.
Forecast for Sunday
As the high develops over New Zealand the coastal ridge should push the
monsoon trough further north. A low pressure system may develop on the monsoon
trough over the southern Gulf. A weak low may also develop over the northwestern
Coral Sea. Rain areas and thunderstorms to continue over most of the tropics
with heaviest falls about the Gulf coast and on the NE tropical coast. Isolated
showers and thunderstorms over the interior. Showers generally about the east
coast, increasing to rain areas about the central coast with possible thunder.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
By Monday, the southern high moves away weakening the coastal ridge. The
monsoon trough will persist over the northern part of the NE tropical coast but
over all rain eases slightly in the tropics. Becoming fine over the southern and
central interior. Decreasing showers over the SE. Showers continuing about the
east coast with rain areas on the central coast. By Tuesday, a similar pattern
from Monday with a large fine area over the central and southern interior. Some
showers and thunderstorms in the far west but most of the activity will occur
over the tropics. By Wednesday, decreasing showers about the east coast and
little change over the tropics. Increasing thunderstorm activity in the far
west.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
