MELBOURNE - Mar 9/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time

the tropical coast and adjacent ranges between Gordonvale and Lucinda.
A Severe Weather Warning is current for flash flooding for the Gulf of
Carpentaria coast south of Weipa.
Flood Warnings are current for various rivers across the state.

Weather Situation
An active near stationary monsoon trough extends from the Gulf Country
district to the Northeast Tropical Coast district. Another trough extends from a
low over the Northern Territory into southeastern Australia. A high over the
Tasman Sea extends a weakening ridge along central and southern Queensland
coasts. An upper level trough will possibly approach northeastern Queensland on
Thursday.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Rain areas and thunderstorms over the northern tropics and Gulf Country, with
some heavy falls, particularly along the Gulf of Carpentaria Coast south of
Weipa. Patchy rain areas, showers and isolated thunderstorms in the far west and
over the southern tropics. Isolated showers over central districts, chiefly
northeast of Emerald. Mostly fine in the southeast with only isolated light
showers. Fine elsewhere. Light to moderate NW winds over the northern tropics.
Moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, tending N to NE over southwestern
Queensland.
Forecast for Thursday
Rain areas and thunderstorms over the northern tropics and northwest with
some heavy falls. Possible localised flash flooding along the Gulf of
Carpentaria coast south of Weipa and the northeast tropical coast between about
Gordonvale and Lucinda [refer to severe weather warnings]. Patchy rain areas,
showers and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere west of about Winton to Cunnamulla
with some moderate falls. Isolated showers over central and southeast districts,
chiefly near the coast north of Fraser Island. Light to moderate NW winds over
the far northern tropics. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Friday
The monsoon trough will persist over the Gulf Country district, however a new
high entering the Tasman Sea will gradually push it north over the northeast
tropical coast. Rain areas and thunderstorms will continue over the northern
tropics with some heavy falls, particularly over the Gulf Country and Peninsula
districts. A surface trough will lie over the Channel Country, producing
scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over far western parts of the
state. An upper level trough moving east over the southern interior will
possibly produce isolated showers and thunderstorms over remaining parts of the
interior. Scattered showers are expected along the central and Capricorn coasts
with possible local thunder. More isolated shower activity is expected over the
southeast coast.
Forecast for Saturday
The monsoon trough will remain anchored over the Gulf Country but continue to
move north along the east tropical coast into Cape York Peninsula. Rain and
thunderstorms with heavy falls will continue over the Peninsula and Gulf Country
districts due to the monsoonal flow. Rain areas and thunderstorms are also
likely along the northeast tropical coast with moderate to possibly locally
heavy falls. The high in the Tasman Sea will intensify as it moves southeast
towards New Zealand. E'ly winds will therefore freshen along the southeast coast
with showers increasing and possible local thunder. A deep E to NE flow will
result in showers and thunderstorms increasing to thundery rain at times over
the central coast and Capricornia districts. Showers and isolated thunderstorms
are expected over the southern and central interior.
Forecast for Sunday
A high will move to the southeast of New Zealand while a new high moves east
over the Great Australian Bight. The monsoon trough should contract north to
extend from the southern Gulf of Carpentaria to northern Cape York Peninsula. A
low pressure system may develop on the monsoon trough over the southern Gulf. A
weak low may also develop over the northwestern Coral Sea. Rain areas and
thunderstorms will continue along the Gulf of Carpentaria coast and over far
northern Cape York Peninsula. Showers and thunderstorms are expected elsewhere
over the tropics and through central districts in a deep, moist E to NE wind
flow. Isolated showers are expected in a weaker E to NE flow over the southeast
coast. A weak trough over the Queensland interior will produce isolated showers
and thunderstorms elsewhere.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The new high will move east into the Tasman Sea on Monday. The monsoon trough
will persist over the Gulf of Carpentaria waters but most likely weaken over the
northern Coral Sea due to the ridge building from the south. A deep NE'ly wind
flow will maintain rain areas and thunderstorms over northern and central
districts, extending into western parts of the state north of Charleville from
Tuesday. Isolated showers will continue in the southeast in an onshore wind
flow, possibly becoming scattered with some local thunder on Wednesday as an
upper trough approaches.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Thursday.
