Weather Situation
The monsoon trough lies across NE tropical coast and extends inland over the
inland Gulf Country. A ridge extending from a high over the southern Tasman
Seaoccurs on the east coast.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Showers thunderstorms generally over the tropics, rain areas with moderate to
heavy falls on the NE tropical coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms
developing in the far west this evening and overnight. Fine over most of the
interior. Showers about the east coast, decreasing inland. Light to moderate
NW/NE winds over the tropics. Moderate to fresh SE'ly winds about the east coast
south of the monsoon trough. Light to moderate NE winds over the interior.
Forecast for Wednesday
Little change from Tuesday, showers and thunderstorms across the tropics,
rain areas with moderate to heavy falls on the NE tropical coast. Isolated late
showers and thunderstorms in the far west. Thunderstorms increasing in the far
SW of the state as a new surface trough moves in from S.A. Fine over a large
area of the interior. Showers about the east coast, decreasing inland.
Forecast for Thursday
The monsoonal trough weakens and shifts north with the heavier rain now
concentrated north of Cairns. The surface trough in the SW progresses into the
Warrego district. This will spread the thunderstorm activity east along the
southern border to about Goodooga. Little change generally in the tropics with a
continuation of showers and thunderstorms. Showers persisting about the east
coast and some extending inland in the afternoon. Fine over the central and
eastern interior.
Forecast for Friday
The surface trough should progress further east but slow down and weaken on
reaching the Maranoa district. Isolated showers and thunderstorms generally over
western and southern districts. The fine zone over the central interior, but
diminishing in size. Showers about the east coast, isolated inland. The
monsoonal trough will continue to drift north and weaken. However rain areas
will increase over Cape York Peninsular as an upper level low develops in the
Gulf.
Forecast for Saturday
As the monsoonal trough moves north into southern Gulf waters a surface low
may form and this will increase the rainfall about the Gulf coast as well as the
west coast of Cape York Peninsular. Showers continuing about the east coast,
decreasing inland and tending to isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms
over western districts. Fine in the far SW of the state.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
By Sunday: Rain areas and thunderstorms continuing about the Gulf coast with
showers and thunderstorms over the remainder of the tropics. Isolated showers
and thunderstorms in the west, becoming fine over the southern interior. Showers
generally over eastern districts although decreasing over the SE. By Monday,
little change in the weather from Sunday although shower activity continues
decrease over the SE region. By Tuesday, becoming fine over the SE and across
southern districts. Little change over the remainder.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Wednesday.
